PS4 or Xone - Question for people that have both Systems...

I'm thinking about getting a Next Gen Console this year (PS4 or Xone).

I've always been an Xbox guy, but when the new systems were announced I said I would switch to Sony after Xbox tried to make all those dumb changes (like having to always be online and no used games, before backtracking due to the backlash they got…)

I like the feel of the xbox controllers (do PS4 controllers feel normal after a while?) and am comfortable with their system, which I mostly use just for games. But like I said I was planning on getting a PS4 and just want to make the right decision.

I mostly play sports games (NBA 2K being my favorite game, and then Madden) and usually get some racing game. Other than that I play Mario games on my Wii U. I don't play online against others (just use it to download updates and rosters and stuff like that). Are there any extra fees for either system on things?

So which system would you suggest from someone that has maybe owned each system (not looking for responses from fanboys of a system)?

Yes, but PS4 controllers never felt "not normal" for me...

I don't play online against others (just use it to download updates and rosters and stuff like that). Are there any extra fees for either system on things?

Are you asking if there are extra fees to download updates and rosters? Then then answer is "no" for both systems. (Could be wrong, I don't think you need PS+ or XB Gold to download custom rosters, but I'm not sure. I've never *not* had PS+ or Gold, so I wouldn't know).

So which system would you suggest from someone that has maybe owned each system (not looking for responses from fanboys of a system)?

If you mostly play sports games and you don't play online, it's simply a matter of:
Do you prefer Forza (out now) or Gran Turismo (will eventually come out, but who knows when)?
Do you play baseball games? (PS4 has MLB: The Show, XB1 doesn't have a baseball game AFAIK).

As someone that owns them both, I think either console would be fine for you. Both controllers feel fine; however, I prefer that the Xbox One still uses batteries in the controller. The DualShock 4 still uses built-in batteries, and the battery life isn't very good. I'm not a huge fan of the idea of having to swap controllers when you're running out of battery power as that's a $60 controller vs. $3 in good rechargeables.

I think both consoles have awkward software aspects that we could complain about.

As for playing online, you only have to pay for Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus if you want to play online. All other aspects of PlayStation Network are free and a few aspects of Xbox Live (I believe all multimedia related) are also locked behind Gold. However, both of those options now provide free games each month, which you may like. However, I highly recommend that you look for a deal if you want to subscribe, because the 12-month membership cards go on sale regularly for about $35-40.

My PS3 died 5 days ago and since the PS4 did not support DLNA and same with the Xbox One i bought a new PS3 for $150. Then 1 day ago DLNA support was announced by Sony on the PS4, doh!

Honestly, both systems are six and half a dozen of each other. Their libraries really aren't radically different from one another. Sony hasn't been putting it very many quality first party games lately IMO. Neither has Microsoft.

When it comes to sports games, MLB: The Show is the only exclusive simulator. So if you're into baseball, it makes the PS4 a no-brainer. RBI Baseball on the XB1 sucks. Madden, NHL, NBA, PGA are all multi-platform.

The Xbox One does have vastly superior media capabilities. DLNA streaming being the big one. It'll likely get better non-gaming app support after the Windows 10 update. Plus you'll be able to stream your XB1 games to any Windows 10 device. The Xbox One is also going to get backwards compatibility for select 360 games later this year.

I've owned both since launch day, I'll give you my thoughts based on what you've outlined above.

1) The controller: I like both. I think the PS4 controller melts into my hands better but I can use the Xb1 controller equally well. I do think the PS4 has a better d-pad but there's not much use for that these days. You should go to gamestop or bestbuy etc and handle both and see what you think.

2) Sports games are the same on both. There is no visual difference between the games on either console. The PS4 does have a baseball game in MLB The Show. There is no real baseball game on Xbox One. If you subscribe to EA Access for $30 a year you get a back catalogue of sports titles. For example right now I have Madden 15, Fifa 15, and NHL 15 from them. You get the full game available to download as long as you're a subscriber. Also have Battlefield 4, Titanfall, UFC, Need for Speed. They put the legacy sports titles up just before the new one is announced/released. Not too bad if you're only a casual fan of them. Another bonus is when EA has a new game releasing, they put up a full game trial for you. For example when the new Madden is going to release, maybe a few days ahead of launch EA Access subscribers will be able to download the full game and try it for a couple hours(there's a time limit). It's the full game and if you decide to buy the game, you can transfer your progress over. The thing is, EA Access is only available on Xbox One. It is not available on PS4.

3) If you don't plan to play online, both the PS4 and Xbox One are free for updates, downloads, video on demand services etc. However if you subscribe to Xbox Live Gold or PSN+ you get 2 free games to download each month. Some of them are pretty good. If you want to play online in the future you will have to subscribe to XBL Gold or PSN+. The exception I believe is free to play games and some MMO games.

4) Racing games are flat out better on Xbox One at this time. Forza is a very good title and the other games that appear on both don't have an advantage on either console IMO. Sony doesn't have anything to compete with Forza right now and hasn't made any announcements regarding a Gran Turismo game. Forza 6 is coming this September on XB1.

Both do pretty much the same things minus a couple features here or there. I think the XB1 is a better value at this time though because for $400 you get the console, a 1TB HDD, and a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Or they offer the 500GB system for $350. Sony right now only offers a 500GB PS4 for $400, but you can change the HDD yourself on a PS4 if you wanted to. I think you'll be happy either way, but if you like sports games and don't mind playing last years game you can get a lot of value from EA Access on the XB1.

The XB1 also supports DLNA. I can browse my NAS drive via the Media Player.

Neither of them plays all formats though.

I have both and prefer PS4, but go with what has games you're interested in and friends playing on.

And the first reply has the best and only answer.

Except it doesn't apply when he talked about sports games and racing games and asked about controller preference. Both have sports and racing. The details we are giving is that there is no real MLB game on the xb1 and the ps4 doesn't have an exclusive racing game to compete with forza.

I have never planned on joining this generation. I game almost entirely on PC, but I've had each iteration of the PS and I had a 360. Seems like the PS tends to get the exclusives I prefer, like The Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War, The Last Guardian, etc. I don't really care for Halo or Gears of War and a lot of Xbox exclusives tend to release on PC as well.

With the recent E3 announcements, it sounds like I might be getting a PS4 eventually. Would be nice to get a decent trade in value for my slim PS3.

Better off to keep the PS3 IMO. Trade values are crap. The 500GB model is only getting $52 from bestbuy and $65 from gamestop. Amazon is giving $85 but that's still not that much IMO. Then again they only sell for $149 these days used.

The PS4 does support DLNA now, through it's new Media Player app. Get with it people! Haha, I know a lot of stuff is going on with e3 and all, but looks like some people missed the memo on that.

Another big one.... The XBO is getting software based Xbox360 game emulation, that supports online play.

Best Buy was running a trade in program a couple weeks ago that guaranteed you $150 or $200 towards a PS4, but I missed the boat on that one.

They're doing a similar thing for the Xbox One right now, and these offers are up and about pretty frequently.

Thanx for all of the responses.

Still not sure what I want to get.
Mostly I'm going to play a couple of sports games (Madden & NBA 2K to start) thru offline franchise modes (for a few years) and get a racing game sometime (maybe Need for Speed).

Need for speed is one of the worst racing games I've ever played (the current one on ps4 and X1)

I wouldn't touch NFS because it's been bad for about 5 years now. I won't even go so far as to say the new one has promise, because they all look pretty at E3. If all you want is multiplatform sports titles and a good racer, I'd go Xbox. Forza will take a dump on NFS, either via Motorsport or Horizon (depending on if you prefer something closer to sim or arcade driving and circuit or open-world racing). Even if you want to try NFS, I'd go Xbox because of EA Access, where you pay $30/year for access to their "Vault." The newest Madden was added maybe 6 months after launch, and NFS: Rivals (the newest one at this time) is in there. Then you can at least try out a decent chunk of other games, like NHL, FIFA, NBA LIVE, Titanfall, Peggle, Battlefield, Dragon Age, and probably one or two I'm forgetting. Then they'll add the newest NFS sometime after its launch, of course, along with the newest iterations of the sports franchises.

I've gotten a lot of value out of PSN's free games. I've downloaded every game since launch and have a pretty sizable library of "free" games. Its nice to fill in the extra time between big releases with those.

Meanwhile, the Xbox One offerings are pretty crappy. Child of Light and PoolNation FX are the only ones I could even be bothered to play. The first is a decent (but really easy) RPG platformer. The second is an OK game ruined by load times and the most-awful game navigation concepts of all time.

One nice aspect with either system is that you can just use their web portals to "purchase" the free games. Doing that allows you to buy games that you currently cannot play, which is handy if you've only got a PS3 or Vita but are considering a PS4. I also use it just because it's a lot faster to just "buy" everything.

Which is one of, like, 6 platformers we've gotten through GWG, and I'm just not looking for a platformer to play on my Xbox One. I'll go fire up the Wii U if I want that experience.

It's still one of the better games anyone has given out.
