PS3's RSX has been down graded in frequency. Link inside

IT LOOKS LIKE the PS3 is way too powerful for us mere humans, and because the value is so overwhelming, Sony is going to make it a little more palatable. The RSX, previously scheduled to run at 550/700 core/memory has been realigned with expectations and the value chain at 500/650.
We can't tell you why the GPU lost nearly 10% of it's clock, it could be an NVidia screwup, or it could be Sony/Cell. Either way, it just became much less of an overwhelming value, but you get a DRM infected drive for 'free' either way.

As a help to the fanbois who inevitably write in somewhat curious broken englishish every time their precious console gets re-specced in a downward manner, please cut and paste the following. It will save you at least an hour trying to figure out the parts of the keyboard that are not WASD:

You teh sux0r 2 sae teh PS3 is not going to teh r0x0r! Yew lie, yew 360 luvr. U teh sux! U maek thing up, go die!!!1111one!1!!!1 heheheheh <---- (LOL WTF)

As for Sony, I know your reaction, you are going to start a whispering campaign on the forums like last time. Please give the PR genius who thought that one up a promotion and a raise. It worked so well to cower me that I got more inside sources disgusted with you third rate backstabbing attempts than I got in a year. Please do it again, I didn't take offense last time, and I promise not to this time.

This seems quite made up, even for the Inq.

Then again, the Inq was right about the R520...

Ahh...I remember the days when Nvidia said that the RSX would be more powerful than the G70 series...and then the G71 popped up!

I was excited to hear it at first (the RSX, not the PS3 :)) but then I stopped caring when the new GPUs came out!

The Inq will make about 20 predictions about whatever and then say they were right. Ignoring the 19 times they were wrong.

True. They do tend to create articles over the most miniscule tid bits of information/Chinese whisper they hear.

I knew about this months ago , just after e3 i knew what sony was going to do. They couldn't even provide 3.2GHz Cell processor in the dev kit by e3 2006. If anyone you got XBOX 360 connected online , then just download Just Cause and see how awesome the game looks and runs really smooth.

Sony's finished. Between the battery recalls and the PS3 troubles, plus rootkits, these guys are done (IMHO).

Thank god. I was hoping that cheap company would get what it deserved. I've had 3 sony TVs fail on me over the last 6 years...

Don't forget 1st time in ten years they were actually low in cash and had to borrow $600million euro for PS3 development and new Blu-ray expansion.

Really?! I know they have been losing money hand over fist for a while but I didn't think things had gotten that bad.

they must be losing alot of money with the PS3. Got too ambitious with the whole Blu-Ray thing, shoulda focused on creating killer-app games. Those are what really push consoles.

i have always liked Sony gear, and if pushed to buy a console would pick the PS3 over the 360.

im inclined to agree

i do like sony's products, you have to admit they do have a way of making technology look sublime, but they just get it all wrong with the actually technology.

they seem to ruin everything their stylists do. my dads sony laptop is a gorgeous piece of kit. but ctrl+alt+delete shows theres a ****** load of sony written programmes infesting the list. no wonder its so ****** slow!.

the PSP is another achingly beautiful bit of kit, the screens sublime, and it has got a decent amount of power, but it still falls flat on its face because of UMD... another sony media format still birth. its naff as a web browser, its naff as an RSS reader (aka it doesnt work), its naff at an MP3 player, and its not even that good at being a video player even with a 4Gb memory stick.

and now the PS3, with its knee jerk wii controller rip off, quirky Cell processor (anyone remember the stuff about the SPE's not having enough cache to be useful? and that amazing write speed of like 16kb to some local memory or something?) a graphics unit thats already out of date, and the rumour that all the kit wont fit inside that box they designed for it.

they really have aimed too high with the PS3.it simply tries to be more than it should be. the ideas were good, but their execution has been beyond sony's capability, and it doesnt help when sony's HYPE machine is belting along with the waste gates jammed shut.

it'll still sell by the bucket load, but i think the better products already been released

Consoles have changed specs before release in the past. This is nothing new. Originally, the Xbox was going to run the cpu at 600Mhz and the gpu at 300Mhz. They eventually changed it to 733Mhz cpu and 250Mhz gpu. Later on, they changed it to 733Mhz cpu and 233Mhz gpu. The Gamecube was originally going to be 405Mhz cpu and 205Mhz gpu. Now it is 485Mhz cpu and 165Mhz gpu.

Final dev kits have been out for a while for the PS3 with final clockrates. If there is a big move now then the launch will be pushed back by close to a year.

If anyone you got XBOX 360 connected online , then just download Just Cause and see how awesome the game looks and runs really smooth.

As an owner of a 360 I can say without hesitation it is the poorest console released in a very, very long time. It has no strengths and a lengthy lists of weaknesses. Saying it is garbage would be extremely unfair to landfills the world over.

Sony finished? Come on now. That's like sayin' Windows is finished.

Let's look at the source. Inquirer? They're a nice lot, aren't they? Weren't they the one's who said the PS3 was "FINISHED" coz the processor had very little speed regarding the GPU memory? Wasn't that speed 100% unnecessary for games? Ah well, it seems the Inquirer has a habit of going after $ony.

Someone said stuff about the PS3 gpu being outdated. Consoles last five years. PC GPUs are upgraded to a new gen every year. When the PS@ or X-box was released, did it have the latest n' greates gpu?

I'm not pickin' sides here. I think both the 360 and the PS3 will be awesome. It's just that people goin' after a single product hearing a small tid here and another bid there really annoys me. $ony give great products at above average prices. So do M$. Nintedo aregiving a weaker product at a much less price. So how is a company better than the others? Each have there own strengths and weaknesses. In the end, it'll be about the games. If one console takes 100$ more one time and keeps throwing great games, that's okay. If a console costs 20$ and can't give a good game, that's crap.

It's funny how much is being said about the "current gen" console war when two haven't even come out yet. [I mean, the PS2, X-box and Cube are past gen, aren't they?]
