OK so sometime in the begining of the year I should finally have enough to get a PS3 and I have a question. Since BC is a big deal to me I know I need to look for one of the 60 Gig versions of the PS3 since it was the best one for BC and features. If you were me where would you go looking for one. Kinda scared of getting ripped from ebay and im not sure of any online retailers that still carry them. I mean once I get it I'll be buying a big hard drive from newegg to put into it and all but I want to make sure I get the 60 gig one for the full BC.

Yeah, you're only going to be able to get a 60GB PS3 used (unless someone has been stockpiling them) through eBay, Craigslist, or some other means. Retailers only sell the 80GB and the 160GB without the BC now.

I remember when I bought my 60gb last year (October 2007), Best Buy only had one left. Got it for $450. I still consider it to be the Cadillac model. There's no way you're going to find one in store now. eBay is probably the best bet since it does provide some degree of security, where Craigslist can be a really craps shoot. When buying off eBay, look for power sellers with at least a 99% rating if you want to be as safe as possible. Alternatively, you can try looking for a 20gb model, which still has full BC (EE and GS) but lacks wifi and the card reader.

Around last year i picked up a 60gb on ebay, and a lot cheaper than retail. The only usage i could tell was the top casing was a little scratched, which is not really a big thing for me. Still works 100% to this day. Ebay can always be a hit or a miss, but dont forget if you think you got beat on ebay there's always paypal to complain to.

Got mine from GameStop. Expensive, but there you go. eBay is probably also a good option.

I had a 40GB PS3 I was able to get it for 299.99 with a special deal. But I missed my PS2 games and I liked the all black 20GB price wise and feature wise. I already had a 100GB 7200RPM 2.5" SATA drive lying around and I didn't care about the media ports on the 60GB all I need is USB really. So about a year ago, sold my 40GB for a profit and I purchased a 20GB Refurbished PS3 from GameStop link and purchased a warranty on it. PS3 came like new and with BC I was happy again. :)

Thank God I didn't sell my PS2 slim for the 3rd time. I had the original chubby PS2, then the black slim, and currently own the silver slim. I really don't see a point of having BC on my PS3, let alone buying an old machine for such an ability. Love my PS3 80GB core and all the HD games on it. Haven't touched my PS2 in months.

After many differant google searches I did find a link that took me to babbages website and had refurb ps3 60 GB version for sale. What are my chances that refurbs from babbages are quality?

And to Baked.....

Ill put it this way. BC is a big deal to me for many reasons. First off the ps3 has better hardware than the ps2 therefore gameplay will be smoother. Second the ps3 can upscale most of the newer ps2 games to 1080p. Third since the ps3 has a HD I will no longer have to rely on memory cards that sometimes become defective and loose the data on them or break. Forth there are still more ps2 games being made than ps3 and therefore having the ability to play ps1,2, and 3 games all on one system boosts my game library like 300 percent. Fifth is the fact that there are alot of rare games that you cannot find in good condition anymore that you can download to the HD on the ps3 but without the BC you wont have that option. Starting to see my point here? I realize that many argu about BC etc but I simply keep asking them the same question which is why wouldn't you want BC? Beats having to keep up with multiple systems and all the extra wires etc.

Which brings me to my other point. When the PS3 was first shown at the E3 in 06 I believe it was. One of the main selling points was that the PS3 would have Full BC and the ability to download all of the classic games from the old days. Then at some point they decided to try to do something about the sales being so bad and dropped the BC to "Lower" the price. But in reality they didnt lower the price they just upped the HD size and dropped the ocassional bundle deal and kept the same price which to me is comepletely retarded. Blue ray drives are much cheaper now and im sorry but I can buy a 500 gig 2.5 HD for 120 bucks online which tells me that the PS3 should be tons cheaper to produce than it was 2 years ago and should warrent either a price drop or the BC should be added back in.

OK im done ranting now.

Well, duh, if you don't play PS2 games, you're not going to care about BC. For those of us who basically live and breathe PS2 JRPGs, it's a required feature. Playing PS2 games on the PS3 60gb is a much better experience than it ever was on the PS2, IMHO.

well erwos will understand me when I talk about this then. Games like Suikoden 1 and 2 are rare finds and if you find them its almost 80% of the time scratched disks. My style of games are rpg / action adventure / strategy / fighting / and rarely racing.

Although you will obviously likely want PS2 BC as well, I should point out here that Suikoden 1 and 2 should both be playable on any PS3 model. All PS3s play PS1 games equally well. The reason is that the PS1 BC is achieved through pure software emulation. PS2 BC is achieved through a mix of software and hardware. The PS2 hardware was cut out of the later PS3 models to cut production costs so those models lost the ability to play PS2 games.

Anyway, I see this misconception all the time. This problem stems from the fact that people constantly talk about PS3s as if they are BC or not BC when in reality they are all BC with PS1 games. But people rarely make that distinction.

IMHO, if you are big into RPGs and strategy games, you definitely owe it to yourself to get a PS3 60gb (or 20gb, I suppose). The PS2 just owns when it comes to those.

I have not had a problem playing discs on my PS3 with a light amount of wear and tear. I tend to be somewhat picky about what I'll buy, though.

However, I find it fascinating that you used Suikoden 1 and 2 as your examples, because both those games are Playstation games. You can play Playstation 1 games on any PS3, even the models "without" BC. It would be completely insane if Konami released Suikoden 1 & 2 on PSN.

Unfortunately, looks like cashback is now 8%. I haven't seen higher in the last three days.

Insane in a good or bad way? Seems like it would be a good thing to me. I'm tired of Sony not giving us more PS1 games in the US PSN store when the Japanese store gets new games practically every week.

I was only using those as examples of games that are rare to find nowadays. There are tons of ps2 games that I would love to be able to play on ps3 such as the everquest series ( Champions return to arms ) and the like. I apologize for choosing a poor example to begin with.

Just to shed a little light on this. Does anyone have a 60 gig ps3 and the time to paste a complete downloadable game list from the playstation store? I am curious what all games you can buy if you have the 60 gig PS3.

Same games you can buy if you have any other PS3 version:

It's like the giant list of how Sony is screwing the USA and the EU.

Doesn't the PS3 upconvert PS2 games? If so, that is reason enough for me. There is only like 3 PS3 games I want to play but I have a back log of about 20 or 30 PS2 games.

Not only does it upconvert them, it does a surprisingly good job of doing so. You also get to save a component input on your TV/receiver - if you're like me, you're already running short.

Do any of the current PS3 still have the card reader? My dad just got a new HDTV and really likes our PS3. He loves the fact that 1) it plays Blu-ray movies and 2) we can toss our camera's memory card in the machine and look at the photos we just finished taking.

Last PS3 version to have the flash reader is the 80GB MGS4 bundle. Current versions have 2 USB ports and no flash reader. You can buy a multi-format flash reader for $15 from Amazon.com.
