PS3/Xbox 360 or wait PS4/Xbox one

Hi,

I want a new gaming consol.

I did not buy a new gaming consol since the Nintendo 64. 20 years a go

I am a basic gamer.

I like nhl games for the hockey.

Is it a best idea to wait the PS4 or Xbox one ?

Order to you, is it better to take the PS3 / xbox 360 ?

I want a update but at a affordable price.

because i want to buy others items as a tablet or a smartphone.

I am 30 year old. Am I too much old for video games ?

Thank-you !

That choice would have to be your choice as people will have different perspectives for each console. Will you be buying any newer games other than NHL and no your not to old to be a gamer

mods should lock this thread there are already like 5 threads all discussing the next gen consoles and how they compare.

If you have a desktop PC, post your specs. You're probably better off dropping a couple cheap upgrades on it, getting cheap games from Steam/GoG, and then wait till the dust settles on PS4/Xbone.

At the very least, used PS3s/X360s with their HUGE libraries of games will be DIRT cheap after this holiday season. Buying one now would be a huge waste of $$.

I had to re-read the OP after reading this, but I don't think that's really the point of this thread.

I personally recommend getting a current gen system rather than waiting - they aren't going anywhere any time soon and you can get them for much cheaper.

PS4 and X1 will not have many games at launch time, so you'd be buying them in the hope that there will be more games that you want to play later. The lists of "all announced games" you'll find include games that won't be released until the end of 2014 not this year.

For both the 360 and the PS3, make a list of all of the games that you want to buy.

Which one has more games that you want?

Are there enough games to make buying it worth the money to you?

Do you want to play online with friends? If yes, ask your friends which console they have (360 or PS3) since you need to have the same console as them.

I would usually tell you to get a current console this late, but it doesn't look like prices will drop much more. You could get a ps3, but for $100 more you can wait and get a ps4.

The last couple EA NHL games were pretty darn good, not available in their same state on PC. You could probably get NHL 14 and a 360 for $150 new right now and it would keep you busy for a while. I don't think NHL will be ready for launch on the new systems, so you'll be waiting more than a year to play NHL on next gen.

OP asked about hockey games, so a PC isn't really helpful.

If you want to play NEW NHL games, you should probably get a next generation console. There will be some overlap from one generation to the next, but not for very long. For instance, the first NHL game for the PS3 was NHL 07, and the last one for the PS2 was NHL 09.

If you buy a PS3 or Xbox 360 now, you will probably be able to play NHL 14 and NHL 15, and possibly NHL 16 if you're lucky, but nothing after that.

If you get a PS4, you'll be able to play NHL 14 and every subsequent game, probably through about 2020 or so.

If you don't care about roster updates, though, and would just like to save money, then maybe getting a cheap PS3 or 360 now would be okay. But like I said, you'll be limited to the next couple years of rosters and you won't be able to play as any of the new players after that.

Keep in mind though that with a PS3 or 360 you save $100 (PS4) or $200 (x1) now, and if you wait 2+ years to buy a PS4/X1 there should be at least another $100 price drop by then.

For example for $300 you can get the PS3 500GB with Assassin's Creed 3 or Gran Turismo 5 + Infamous 2 now, and NHL 14 for $60 (out September) plus if you want NHL 13 now for $40. You can also pick up piles of other games including Game of the Year editions. You'll save $100 and get to play NHL games for 5 months before the PS4 even comes out.

Then for xmas 2015 or 2016 you get the PS4 xmas bundle, probably for $300 by then instead of $400.

But in the end, he would spend $300 that he doesn't really need to. If he were to buy a PS3 for $300, then wait for the PS4 to hit $300, he would still be spending $600. Might as well just wait and get the PS4 out the gate and save money in the long run.

IMO, wait until the price drops on the current consoles and buy one of those. I imagine there will be decent prices for them around the holidays. You don't sound like somebody that would need or use your console enough to make the new ones worth it to you, so I'd say save your money and get the cheapers ones.

Will the next NHL 14 be on the next gen ( PS4 / Xbox one ) ?

if not, i should wait NHL 15 or NHl 16.

I love Gaming Sports, Gaming car, Story that i am the heroes but not with too much difficulties.

The advantage for a gaming consol it's that all games are certified.

For example, all people will have the same result.

I want to play offline and with my friends in my house.

I don't think to play online with others players.

I will play hockey games more often than the others kind of games.

Thank-you !

Well my point really was that Xbox360/PS3 as a new purchase right now makes no sense to me. Too expensive so late.

In december you'll see stuff like : PS3 or 360, 3 controllers, 20 games, $85/obo all over craigslist. It was the exact same way for Xbox and PS2 when the new ones came out. I remember buying a PS2 fattie and about 70 games for $50 in 2006, just because I wanted about 20 of the games, including all of the .HACK series. I also got an Xbox for $20 that had a bunch of games on a 250GB hard drive after 360 hit.

I just think that buying a new console in the final year of it's first-level status is a little crazy, considering it is about to not have new releases, and will be worth 1/3rd or less than what it is now in 6 months.

I foresee $50 PS3/360 as common used prices by mid 2014, and sub-$100 packages before christmas. Even for slims/Falcons/etc. I've just seen it too many times before to think that this time will be some sort of exception to the rule. It's even dumber when the companies make a NEW version after the new gen comes out. PSOne, SNES mini, Toploader NES, they all make cool little collector toys, but really didn't make much sense in the north american market when the market is already flooded with perfectly working used consoles for half the price or less.

I just looked it up and NHL 14 will not be available on the PS4/Xbox One. It will be PS3/360 only. So you'll have to wait for NHL 15 if you get a PS4 or Xbox One.

Like DaveSimmons said, you could get a PS3 or Xbox 360 now for a bit cheaper. The games and extra controllers are also cheaper than the next generation of consoles. You could get NHL 13 for a nice discount since it will be replaced by NHL 14 soon. The only issue is you won't be able to get new NHL games after a couple years.

I agree with Arkaign's post that you should wait for the new consoles to be released, then buy an old console from someone who is replacing theirs. But it sounds like you're not from the US, so there might not be as much supply. Still, if you wait until the end of this year, you should be able to find a good deal on a current generation console.

If you don't mind waiting until early next year, I would suggest the ps4. I'm sure that the ps3 will come down in price after launch, but as others have said the support will eventually dry up, and you are paying for 7 year old tech. Sony has said you can play the ps4 without ever connecting it to the internet, so that is a plus for your situation.

Very good points, I forgot the PC is somewhat of a wasteland for hockey games.

I think wait till holidays and get used 360/PS3 is the cheapest option and best if you don't care about online/new rosters.

Or wait till holidays and get new Xbone/PS4 if you have the cash and care about online + getting new releases going forward.

Personally I'd lean towards the first, wait till the current gen stuff is dirt cheap this holiday, pick up used games for $5/less for sports titles, then grab the next release of the consoles a year later. PS4/Xbone should be $299ish if the war is well under way by Xmas 2014. Along with improved revisions of the consoles, revised bugs, larger library of games, etc.
