It doesn't deteriorate as quickly as you think. Good quality film lasts a long time.
You seem quite clueless in your comment about the optics. The quality of the optics back then was far better than you give it credit for. They were surprisingly good, way better than you'd need for shooting a movie. They didn't have CCD's or high-tech electronics back then, but they mastered making optics a long, long time ago. Optics technology was good enough to allow Galileo to see the main moons of Jupiter in the early 1600's.
