With the ps3 having a blue-ray disc drive while the xbox 360 has a dual layer dvd drive, how will this have an impact of games coming from the devloplers?

slower blue ray with lots of space vs faster cheaper dvd9. Also now with its monster gpu xbox360 is suppose to be on par with the ps3 graphics wise... should be a good gen.

Why is blueray slower? I would have thought it needs to be faster, since it is basically designed to play a 50gb 2hr movie.

Its not.

BluRay will allow PS3 games to incorporate more HD FMV into their cutscenese, a longer, more varied soundtrack, etc.

On paper, the PS3 graphics chip is more powerful than the XB360's, btw. :p

Why is everyone making a big deal about the XBox 360 having a dual-layer drive? Shocking news--the XBox has one too! And the PS2!! And most any DVD player in the world!!!

If bluray isn't adopted as the standard then I would think PS3 games would be more expensive.

vs revolution?

Can't count it out when you don't know anything about it.

Yeah, I don't think Revolution will have BluRay, thus we'd most likely see 3rd party developers keep size down to dual layer DVD vs. going all out to fill up a BluRay disc, that way they could have their game available for each system maximizing their sales. It'll be up to Sony to make sure they get something really big if they plan on filling up BluRay, however its more of a gimmick to get people to buy the PS3 so they could play HD movies moreso than the extra space being needed for games, considering BluRay is Sony's baby.

not really, the quality of teh graphics and textures are sorta limited by the console hardware. its not like they are rendering pixar stuff:) current xbox stuff is only single layer. the new consoles are powerful enough to use h264 to save a lot of space on video...

Exactly.
Both consoles only have 512MB of RAM and that's what's going to limit textures, not the amount you can fit on a disc.
As the Microsoft guy said in an interview somewhere, current XBox games only use one layer of DVD, so they still have 4.5GB of space to work with for XBox 360, because they have the whole second layer if they wish to use it.
Sure, it might not be that much more compared to BluRay, but it should be "enough" I would expect.

i personally don't feel bluray is goign to be the standard of HD-DVD, size wise they aren't TOO far off, hd-dvd is sitll an improvement over dual layer dvd, cost to manufacutre is cheap since no new hardware is needed to produce them ust an update, and players will be backwards comptible with todays dvd's. I have also heard that the one the pr0n industry chooses will be a large factor in dertermining which becomes the standard? and that they are leaning towards hd-dvd.
well anyway i don't think the 360 having dual layer is going to limit it a great deal as i don't think most games still won't use the extra resource but you never know

why didnt they come up with bluray before now? i mean as i understand it they use blue light instead of red light, for the laser. blue light has a smaller wavelength and therefore takes up less space meaning u can fit more in the same space.

is it because blue is a hard colour to generate~? i remember my friend saying that blue LED's were more expensive than red or green as blue LEDs were harder to make

not to mention how few xbox games actually fill the single layer. average size is what? 1-2gb? lol:)

Normally I would be all for utilizing a new technology in a console as opposed to a rehash in order to push the bleeding edge, but this time around I'm concerned this will have the opposite effect. With the PS2/Xbox, DVD's were already established and these were the devices that would bring DVD to a more massive market, meanwhile offering more space for games to allow better graphics and no disc swapping(side benefit: hopefully encouraging DVD adoption with computers, since computer games were long in need of it). But now with BluRay, the technology isn't established, and as of this writing you can't even buy a BluRay player(just a recorder). By jump-starting BluRay adoption so hard, Sony threatens to pollute the technology by both giving it a bad reputation with consumer if the PS3 has problems, and artificially price stand-alone players out of the market since the PS3 will be subsidized, while stand-alones will likely cost $300+ at launch(which could actually put them over the price of the PS3) - this in turn hurts BluRay adoption by causing the stand-alone market to fail and prices on BluRay players will not drop like DVD players did. I also don't like how Sony is tying BluRay to HDMI, DRM of this level is a bad deal for consumers who will be forced to take it in order to get BluRay.

As for BluRay for gaming, I'm not sure I see the purpose yet. When DVDs came, it was obvious, but even the most progressive PC games are still under a DVD in size(if they even come on a DVD at all). I am going to go out on a limb that BluRay will be the right choice in the end for space(i.e. when the next-gen consoles near EOL game size will routinely exceed DL-DVD size), but it's not a given like it was with DVD - a lot of it will have to do with how well "epic" games like HL2 sell, where the scenery is changed a lot. Gamers also stand to lose here if the PS3 ends up with BluRay problems like the PS2 did with reading DVD-type discs(which seems more likely, considering just how new BluRay is). We'll see how things go though, I do like BluRay for gaming as long as devs don't go nuts with FMV like they did with CD's and DVD's, especially if they use TDK's new virtually-unbeatable BluRay disc protective coating.

I don't care... personally Blu Ray won't be available right away, I think Microsoft made the right move here.

imagine buy a bluray star wars(or whatever) movie and then after finishing the movie(on whatever player)

popping it into your ps3 and playing the game.

sounds fun.

yea true, sad how pc's been stuck using cds for so long, but its also true that its not holding the graphics back.

That's exactly the reason. XBox has one and PS2 as well. SO why should the 360 not have something better? That's one main selling point for the pS3 is that it wll have bhe BluRay discs for such huge amounts of space while the XBox will have far less space which means less options for cramming in more detail.
