It doesn't deteriorate as quickly as you think. Good quality film lasts a long time.

You seem quite clueless in your comment about the optics. The quality of the optics back then was far better than you give it credit for. They were surprisingly good, way better than you'd need for shooting a movie. They didn't have CCD's or high-tech electronics back then, but they mastered making optics a long, long time ago. Optics technology was good enough to allow Galileo to see the main moons of Jupiter in the early 1600's.

Another good selling point for the HD-DVD Standard over Blu-Ray is that supposedly you can take a HD-DVD movie and play it in current DVD players... Blu-Ray you have to buy a whole new player... also.. HD-DVD will hold up to 30 GB i believe...

It's a gamble by Sony for sure but remember that Sony has a massive back catalogue of films that it could easily put onto it's BluRay discs. It's a way for Sony to force it's BluRay tech into the market cos the PS3 will sell alot of units whether it wins the console battle or not, but it's not quite VHS vs BetaMax this time round, although the BluRay does fall into the being better yet more expensive category as the BetaMax was back then.

I believe the other big movie companies have already voted for the HD-DVD but if this move pays off for Sony then it will really pay off $$$!

The BluRay in the PS3 will be able to read and playback DVD movies. PS2 are on DVD and I'm sure the PS3 can play back DVD movies. Sony won't shoot themselves in the foot like that. Or at least I hope not not like the mp3 complete BS they have been doing with thier mp3 players

I bought my first CD writer for $260. It was a 4x Ricoh Media Master and I got a deal on it because they were closing it out. BlueRay has been in development for years. For those of you who think the first generation BlueRay drive is going to cost the same as a standard dual layer DVD you are delusional.

Xbox360 has USB ports. In 5 years when the drives are less than $100 (assuming that the standard is finalized by then), you just buy a stand alone BlueRay drive, plug it in, and away you go.

BUT you don't want to force the consoler consumers to buy extra 'peripherals' like this. The MEGA CD flopped and so did the 32X thing they made for it. Stuff like this always flop as it isn't 'standard'.

9GB will be plenty for games anyway.
