I find it terribly unreasonable to purchase a movie, and then be limited to using it on a single device. The tradeoff wouldn't feel worthy unless the purchase price was vastly lower than what they're trying to charge now.

It just bugs me to know that... at some point down the line, years perhaps, support for the PS3 will fall to the wayside, or the service will die, or you'll have a corrupt file that they won't fix... SOMETHING, that will make it so you won't be able to view the videos again. And then you've wasted your money.

If you buy physical discs, you can keep them in immaculate shape, and you'll be able to find a working DvD/blu-ray player for many decades down the road.

Back when Blu-ray and HD-DVD were duking it out, some people were saying that digital downloads are the wave of the future and that Blu-ray and HD-DVD would be the last physical formats and would be overtaken by digital downloads sooner rather than later. Bollocks. These people live in a fantasy world where everyone has broadband, everyone wants broadband, and everyone is willing to deal with DRM. I think the Netflix/Napster all-you-can-eat for a set monthly price with no actual ownership model is great. I'd probably pay $40 a month for such a service that gave me access to every TV show and every movie that's on DVD. Hell, I'd probably cancel my cable TV subscription. But I don't see the day when I buy a DRMed downloaded movie approaching very quickly. I also don't buy downloadable games when there is a disc version available. I bought both Warhawk and GT5: P on Blu-ray.

Well as a test comparison, I tried renting a video and wasn't too impressed with the download speeds which affected my ability to stream the movie at the same time. Usually on the Xbox360, I can let it run 30mins to an hour, and then stream the movie without problems.

With the PS3, I tried the same thing, but it couldn't keep pace even after a couple hours of downloading which in the long run would affect my 24hour viewing license, and I only downloaded the standard definition version.

I don't think I'll be renting much through the PS3 but who knows how hammered they may have been last night since the service just started.
