Take it from me these don't work on PS3 very well unless you set up custom controls.

Playing NHL09 with the sidewinder means rotational axis is shoot/pass which was sooo hard

Why would you even use those controllers instead of the Sixaxis/Dualshock 3? I didn't even know you could use PC controllers on the PS3.

For cheap multiplayer fun..

I have only one controller and my friends were over so we decided to give it a shot.

Gravis Cordless Rumblepad Pro worked fine (Funny it doesnt work on PC as PnP)
Gravis Controller w/o Rumble/cordless worked fine also
Gravis Gamepad Pro does not work because it has no analog sticks, so it is missing too many buttons
Sidewinder Precision Pro (see above)

Most PC controllers will work PnP via USB as long as they have the right buttons.. I s hould try out my steering wheel from PC too

I didn't know you could do this either. I might have to hook up my Logitech Cordless Rumblepad and see how it goes. That would put me at four controllers if it works.

Also note

NHL 09 CAN support over 4 players on one console! I used my monitor as a USB hub when I tried all the controllers

While we're on the subject, you can use Saturn USB gamepads on the PS3 perfectly. There are no sticks or home button, but since the Saturn pad is one of the best gamepads ever created for fighters it makes a good investment for fight fans that don't like, can't afford, or don't always use sticks.

I saw someone mention this on in a thread over at Ars a few weeks back so I picked one up off eBay for $20 shipped and it works great. I've been using it with SSF2THD. You may need to get a USB extension depending on how far you sit from your PS3, but those are super cheap at Monoprice.

Does it survive in a game that requires sticks?

Maybe we can turn this thread into a list of confirmed controllers that work PnP and how well, and in what games they were tested in

What do you mean by "survive"? I've only used it so play SFII so far, but you don't need the sticks for that one.

I mean how does it end up in a game that may require sticks... like NHL for example with my Gravis GamepadPro we couldn't shoot at all even if we changed to NHL 94 controls

I'm sure it wouldn't work properly since there are no sticks at all. I'd mostly recommend it for fans of fighting games.

I tried the 360 controller through USB and it didn't work :p but a cheap Genius maxfire (or something like that) d-pad worked just fine.
