MY PS3 won't play DVD's on my TV but BD and games work no problem. I can hook the PS3 up to my monitor and it will play DVD's fine. Anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions for fixing it? I've played with all the video settings on the PS3, I think. Without any luck...

What TV do you have? My guess is that it's something in either the resolution settings or DVD-upscaling settings on the PS3.

I had a weird issue where it wouldn't play any BD or DVD's but it was okay with games. I did a format and it fixed the issue.

I've got a cheap westinghouse LCD, I don't have the model number off hand.

I tried that already Koing, no luck :(

Kalrith, I've got all the resolutions set on the PS3 and I've tried all 3 DVD upscale options and none of them worked. The TV tells me it switches to 480p then loses signal. It's really strange.

The one thing I need to try is to set the PS3 to 480p only and see what happens, I ahve a feeling it's going to be more of the same tho.

Do you have the PS3 connected to your TV with the same cable as your monitor?

yep, they're both using the same HD component cables. At first I thought it was a PS3 issue, becase the DVD would work for a few seonds then the signal die. But after trying it on the monitor it doesn't seem to be. I don't know though.

Your westinghouse should have an hdmi port. Have you tried that? It really doesn't make sense to me though that blu rays would work but not dvds. What resolution shows up when you are playing games? When you select the resolutions you want to use on your PS3 do you test them first before you select them? Maybe it is a certain resolution that your tv isn't compatible with.

I don't have a HDMI cable but I could get one to test it, didn't think of that. games play at 1080p or 720p and I can set it to 480p and it works ok on the start screen. Still haven't set it to only 480p and tried to play a movie yet tho, I'll try that tonight and report back.

I trid to just use 480p and it does the same thing, TV gets no signal. This also happens with netflix streaming... So do you think it's a TV issue or a PS3 issue?

Upscaled DVD output isn't allowed over non-HDMI connections. Not sure why plain old 480p output shouldn't work though.

yea I dunno. I talked to my brother I'm going to borrow his ps3 and HDMI cable and do some testing tonight. I have someone coming by to look at the TV tomorrow because one of the HDMI ports died. So hopefully it's a tv issue as it's still under warranty.

so it turns out it was a TV issue, the PS3 works great. I've been without a TV for 2 weeks while it was getting 'repaired' now DVD's play but BD don't. They also managed to jackup whatever takes place when I switch from hdmi to coax inputs takes about 20 min for it to pick up TV signal now... Fuck best buy and their extended warranty. I'm going to allow them to attempt to fix it one more time. Anyone know how messed up something has to be before they just give you a new TV?

So at this rate, I'll be without a TV for about another month, assuming they can't get it right... great. Not that I watch TV all that much but it is nice to be able to sit down and relax in front of the TV from time to time.

yeah, all the places that do extended warranty work suck. For a big investment, it can pay off having that warranty, but getting it fixed under it is a pain in the neck. I still remember the incompetants who were trying to fix my PC back in the day when my parents bought me one for college (they thought it would be best to have a name brand and not something I built). Well, the power supply crapped out on it while under the normal warranty. HP came out to my dorm and replaced it then and there, no hassle, no fuss. My DVD drive failed while under the extended warranty, and my parents insisted I take it in for replacement since it was under the extended warranty (and the fact that they cost $200 still at that time). So I drop if off letting them know the DVD drive was dead and needed to be replaced. They said, we will determine what is wrong and how to go about fixing it (as though I had no clue as to what I was talking about and I should apologize for even thinking that I know anything about a computer).

Two weeks go by and no word, so I call them up. They said that they were still working on it and call them back in 2 more days. I call them back 2 days later and they said that they took a look at the system and determined that the hard drive was bad, so they replaced the hard drive (and threw mine out), and that they were wondering if I had the original system DVD so they could re-image the system. I had a fit since I knew the hard drive was fine. I at least had made a backup of the important stuff a little while before, so nothing really lost except for the time it would take me to re-install everything. I brought them the system DVD, and they said it should be another day before they could finish loading the original system software from the DVD and that they would give me a call when it was ready, no big deal in my mind, and I left. I call them back 2 days later since I hadn't heard from them and they then tell me it wasn't done yet because they determined that the DVD drive was bad (WHICH IS WHAT I BROUGHT IT IN FOR AND TOLD THEM)! They said it would be 2-3 weeks to get the replacement part. In the mean time they used one of their DVD drives to reload the OS but were having problems as the system wouldn't boot. I had had enough at this point and demanded they return my PC in its current state and that they simply tell me when the DVD drive arrived so I could pick it up and install it myself. They eventually gave in and gave me back my computer with their "loaner" dvd drive. I take it home and notice right away that the idiot techs there had clue zero in their brains. The reason it wouldn't boot was because they put both the DVD-ROM AND the hard drive on the same IDE cable and had BOTH devices set as MASTER! It isn't rocket science. Why would they even put the hard drive on the same IDE channel as the DVD is a question for the ages, especially since they were on two different channels when I took it there, and it was quite obvious that it was designed to use separate channels, let alone the performance benefits for being each on their own channel!!!! Idiots...
