Link - Seems like just yesterday he said his first words..."Massive Damage"

November 17 is a special date for us at SCEA because, as many of you fans know, it?s when we launched PLAYSTATION 3. Two years ago today, we delivered our next-generation console, providing consumers with a gaming and home entertainment system unlike anything in the market ? the power of the Cell Broadband Engine, out-of-the-box HDMI support for 1080p resolution, and a Blu-ray drive for high-definition movies and expansive games. The PS3?s launch was also when the Resistance franchise was born, and the original title?s success has spawned a blockbuster sequel with Resistance 2 and a unique PSP installment with the upcoming Resistance: Retribution.

But that?s just what we started with, and PS3 has come a long way since November 17, 2006. If you stood in line the night before launch, the PS3 that you took out of the box when you got home isn?t the same system that it is today. We?ve added new features and enhancements that you all have asked for, such as Trophies, XMB access in-game, Remote Play with PSP, DLNA Media Server capability, and BD-Live support, to name just a few. Along the way, we became the first gaming system to be recognized by Guinness World Records for Folding@Home and, because of the strong PS3 install base, helped Blu-ray win the format war.

PlayStation Network has truly hit its stride with unique downloadable games and a video delivery service featuring movies, TV shows, and original programming that you can watch in HD with your PS3, or bring with you on your PSP. And with 14 million active accounts and 273 million pieces of content downloaded, we know that you?re thirsting for this digital entertainment.

Of course, most important to all of you is the game library, and we?ve seen exclusive titles launch that showcase the PS3?s capabilities, from Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots, which takes full advantage of Blu-ray?s massive 50GB capacity to deliver the best installment in the storied franchise, to LittleBigPlanet, whose infectious charm and user-generated content make it a genre-defying experience. There?s something for every type of gamer on PS3, and the efforts of SCE?s first-party development studios (the industry?s largest ) along with our third-party partners will continue to deliver knock-out titles.

Thanks to all of you, PS3?s momentum is stronger than ever. There are nearly 17 million PS3 systems around the world, and in the United States, PS3 hardware sales are up nearly 100 percent from where we were at this time last year. Software sales have tripled from a year ago. Yes, we?re proud about everything we?ve accomplished, and we?re even more psyched about where we?re going with our holiday software lineup (our best to date) and the new Uncharted: Drake?s Fortune PLAYSTATION 3 Bundle, which features a 160GB PS3 and is available now.

We wouldn?t be where we are today without your continued support and all of the feedback you?ve provided here on this blog. We don?t have a crystal ball, but we know that you can look forward to many great games and PS3 enhancements over the next 12 months, starting with the upcoming launch of PlayStation Home?s open beta, which will bring the PS3 community closer together. Then, just around the corner, you?ll have Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, and tons more. So please join me in wishing a happy second birthday to PS3!

Only 8 more years to go until Carousel. Happy birthday PS3!

I haven't touched mine in about 3 months; since Resistance came out as a 'Greatest Hit'. I'll probably pick up Resistance 2 and whatever else is recommended in the next month.

Biggest concern now is whether or not to buy the extended warranty from Sony Style. My PS3 turns 1 on December 26, and it's already been RMA'd once for a faulty BD drive. Is $80 worth the piece of mind or do I risk a $150 one time payment fo future eff ups?

Yeah, haven't touched mine in months either. If it wasn't for the crappy resale value and the couple BR's i have, itd be gonzo.

I guess for each year in the market the PS3 gets one good game added to it's library? ;)

Anybody have the ebay avg selling price for this thing on launch day? Not really sure why it flopped like it did. Seemed like it had lots of hype. Bunch of people buying them out of the gates but nobody to buy them on Ebay. I think it was back to near retail prices on Ebay within 36 hours.

I got my PS3 in June when we purchased a 40" Sammy LCD. I have two games, both of which I never play. And on a blue moon Netflix sends up a BluRay disc we will use it to watch that. Otherwise I have to admit it was a big waste of cashola :(

it flopped because it cost $600 at launch.
I think the cheap one was $500. You just can't have a console that expensive and expect it to sell well to the general public. Which is also a big reason the Wii sold so well. It was up against 2 very expensive machines.

Side note - every thread up to this point in the thread has bashed the PS3, mostly (or completely?) by PS3 owners. :Q

I thought it took about a month to drop to retail on eBay, but it definitely didn't sell for a huge premium for long. It warms the cockles of my heart to know that people sat in line for half a day or more in the freezing cold to make minimum wage selling their PS3 on eBay.

I know the PS3 started showing up readily in stores in early January, because I was confused as to why I was seeing them everywhere. That was shortly before Jack Tretton (or whatever his name is) told EGM he'd give them something like $10k for every PS3 they could find him on store shelves. :D

Saint's Row 2, Dead Space, Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4... more than one good game a year, I think.

There's actually 3 games I'd want a PS3 for at this point: Mirror's Edge, LBP and Valkyria Chronicles. Hmmm.

Edit: Although Mirror's Edge may come to PC?

It's already out on the 360.

I actually play very few PS3 games on my PS3 - only Disgaea 3 so far. I'm looking forward to picking up Valkyria Chronicles at some point, too, I suppose. Mostly, I use it for playing PS2 JRPGs and BR-Ds (the latter coming to a halt when Sony gets a semi-reasonably priced BR-D mega changer out).

The PS3 isn't a bad platform - but the choice of compromises made (high price, weird programming) for the benefits it gave was perhaps ill-timed. If Sony could hit a home run with Home, they might be able to save themselves from a third-place finish this generation, but it's looking less and less likely as time goes on - especially as Microsoft finally gets their feet under them in Japan and continental Europe.

Sony lets owners upgrade the hard drive and install linux on it without voiding the warranty/online account. The hard drive upgrade in particular is one of the biggest reasons for hacking. The other being for media streaming options which the PS3 supports natively fairly well.

The only thing left for hacking is game pirating which really is an insignificant population of people in overall scheme of things.

It came out of the gates lame with a stupid high entry price and that label still sticks with it. Combine that with a library that severely lagged behind the 360 for the better part of 18 months and it's not a great combination for sales.

SR2 on PS3?? I don't think MS is gonna let that happen.

There has to be some sarcasm or back story I'm missing here.
