I hope this explains the absolutely horrible response time (at best) or complete black out of the PSN Network(at worst) I've seen today.

My system came in today. Got it updated to 2.01. Now just an hour ago I'm being bugged to get 2.1. But I can't get online because the PSN network is slammed, and Sony hasn't taken the time to upload it online so that I can dump it on an SD card and install.

Updated my PS3 and it worked fine with .divx and .avi files (that I had on a dvd).

But, the freaking browser does not play divx movies:|

^ Are you talking about stage6? I think that's cause you normally have to download a program to play those.

Direct links from stage6 work perfectly though.

I can't seem to play any files I ripped myself with AutoGK, but other files seem to play fine.

So far the only difference I see is in the video sample size. Using default settings, AutoGK encoded mine with 12bit sample size. The videos that I have gotten play are 24bit sample size.

I really don't want to reencode all of my dvd's, so I'm looking for a workaround...

There is. And, it seems to work with most people's files.

Mine, however.... :(

It plays xvid just fine. Ive streamed several files, and everything has worked.

Ive read that someone got a 2.92gig file to play too. I dont have a file that big to try. I just have TV shows, not movies.

Lots of mixed feedback so far...smells like bugs.

Does anyone know if they've added BC for PS2 games in this release? Does Sony publish list of improved titles?

Sony does update the compatibility database here, though not after every firmware update:
BC DB it be

I have that link but it does not help much as I have to check each and every title I am interested in every time to see if their status have changed. I would much rather see quick list of the games that were added/updated in the most recent release to make notice of titles I may want to play. Xbox.com has it much better with one big list of all original Xbox games that are BC.

Still no Xvid support. Can't play files over 2GB. Can't play copy-righted material.

Those seem to be the only major limitations. No Xvid support is a downer. The 2GB file limit can be a problem in a few situations. Not being able to play copy-righted material will suck for those trying to obtain videos legitimately.

im sure in a week there will be ANOTHER ps3 FW update and i'll turn on my ps3 and have to download 150mb off of their slow ass server just so i can get my ps3 online.

I think you just have problems. My whole download/install process only takes a few minutes at most. I don't see that as too much to ask for...they don't happen everyday, and they're usually pretty good about adding features or fixing a problem.

I'm with purbeast, PS3 updates take for-fucking-ever. I'm updating my system tonight, and it takes 30 minutes to download the damn thing on a very-close-to-advertised-speed 6Mb cable connection, and then it takes another few minutes to install. It's not really that big of a deal in the long run, but when compared to the competition who comes out with a HUGE update every 6 months that is only 7MB in size and takes a mere 30 seconds from download start to install finish, the monthly PS3 updates seem ridiculously unoptimized.

You're doing it during peak hours. Took me less than 10 mins to do the whole thing today. Downloading, installing, rebooting twice, etc. Took about 2 mins to download. And FW updates are not every week. At least be realistic about it.

But hey, lets complain some more... Start it, make a sammich, go back and play.

Yeah, no joke. Mine go pretty quickly, and my connection speed is 10mbps/1mbps. I usually do them at least a few hours after they're released (just whenever I get on), but they have never taken THAT long.

Updated my PS3. Tried a couple DivX videos (avi) in a dvd-r disc. The system identifies the files, gives the correct info on vide size (640x480), total run time, video codec (Divx), and audio codec (mp3), yet when I try to play them, it says unsupported file format.

That's easy for Xbox because they make updates specific for each game they add. PS2 games, on the other hand, are handled universally.
