while i'm tired of having to download 150mb updates every week on my ps3, this one has some worthwhile features now that it can play divx as well as WMV files.

Meh, this isn't all that big of a deal since the 360 has had this support for 2 weeks now and, IMO, has a better interface when dealing with videos. Kinda weird how unimportant it seems when the competitor beats you to the punch only a couple of weeks in advance.

Also, I find it funny they are adding their own version of vioce masking that Microsoft did away with in the 360 after they found that nobody really used it on the original XBOX.

Still no Xvid support. Can't play files over 2GB. Can't play copy-righted material.

Those seem to be the only major limitations. No Xvid support is a downer. The 2GB file limit can be a problem in a few situations. Not being able to play copy-righted material will suck for those trying to obtain videos legitimately.

It wouldn't have been so bad if the voice masks just didn't flat out suck and/or were annoying.

Frankly, I would encourage the high-pitched 12 years to use voice-masking to make their voices less annoying.

Voice masking is extremely irritating to me, right up there with the voice of a screaming 9-year old

edit: And you know that every idiot out there will select the highest-pitched tone that they can for voice masking. That or the deepest. It will be just another reason to mute people every game. Can you mute people in game on the PS3?

The big deal here isn't even DivX, it's the profile 1.1 for Blu-Ray. This will make the PS3 one of the few profile 1.1 players currently available on the market. Of course, now we need actual BR movies created for 1.1.

What would be an awesome feature that I would pay lots of money for would be a filter that would autoblock/mute any voice over a certain pitch.

Which ever console figure that out first is the clear winner in the console wars.

Things like PiP commentary for Blu-Ray movies.

Also, I wonder what limitations WMV files have? A lot of the videos I have are currently in WMVHD format so that they can be streamed to the 360. If the PS3 can play these then I'll use it instead of the 360 since the PS3 is much more quiet than my 360.

What? That's stupid. Why is it unimportant? What about PS3 owners that don't have a 360? I'd say its just as important to them now as it would be if the 360 didn't have it a few weeks ago.

here's the ArsTechnica version

I don't use P2P or usenet so divx doesn't matter to me, but it's nice that Sony is keeping blu-ray playback up to date.

I watched Ratatouille last night, it looked great in 1080p. And they managed to surprise me with yet another plot that I never expected to like. I  Pixar.

just change the fourcc from xvid to Divx and you can play it easily.

It was pretty much the only real advantage HD-DVD had over BD.

So, is this really a firmware update? or is it just a playstation OS software update?

they are the same thing.

Typically Firmware <> Operating System. It sounds to me like they're just patching their OS. I highly doubt that the system is getting flashed every update.

I think you just have problems. My whole download/install process only takes a few minutes at most. I don't see that as too much to ask for...they don't happen everyday, and they're usually pretty good about adding features or fixing a problem.
