PS3 to computer monitor and sound

So I've been thinking about buying a PS3, but I need to hook it up to my computer monitor. I can use hdmi to dvi cable, but then I lack sound. I use headphones for everything so is there a cable that will do exactly what I want? My monitor is the acer x223w so 22 inch, 1680x1050, are there any issues with that? It accepts both dvi and vga.

Make sure the monitor is HDCP compatible, first of all.
Second, you can use HDMI and then use the A/V cables for sound. This is what I do with my monitor. If the monitor doesn't have aspect ratio, you'll also be playing at 16:10, which will be stretching the picture, FYI.

For headphones, you'd need something like this:

I use an HDMI > DVI cable and an adapter like the one above, except mine is all around female, they come with most sets of Logitech desktop speakers.

Unless your monitor can do sound, this is pretty much the only way you're going to get sound out of your PS3. Those cables aren't that expensive either if you know where to look and all you need is the RCA cable that came with your PS3.

Itll cost you about 30 bucks for all the parts if you order online. Least thats how much i paid for mine only to find one of those logitech speaker cords mentioned above. the audio cables are the cheap part though. The hdmi cable is the most expensive

There's no need to spend a lot of money on this stuff. I use that exact DVI-to-HDMI cable from my PC to my LCD TV, and it works great. I've been using it in that setup for about a month, and I used it with my plasma for about a year prior to that. I have a similar audio-cable setup for connecting my PS2 to my headphones, but I haven't tried it out yet.

Note that the above won't work if you have a 1/4" instead of 3.5mm connector on your headphones.

You'd have to use RCA couplers with that to connect it to the PS3. 1 cable + 2 couples doesn't seem any better than 1 cable plus 1 coupler.

I didn't even bother to check the other end of it. :thumbsdown: But I'd prefer an all female connector so that I wouldn't have to use couplers is what I mean.

I've got 20WMGX2's and I use dvi-hdmi cable for the video and the sound is sent to my reciever by optical OR to my monitor by rca (because its basically a tv)

I can also use component input but its far uglier

If you are also using the PC for you know, PC stuff, then you might want to do what I did and instead of using couplers, get an AV switcher. I used that in my setup and it worked really well for me. 1 was PC, 2 was PS3. I also used an HDMI switcher since my monitor only had 1 DVI input.

This is why I bought my monitor with HDMI and a sound jack: much easier, and I can output sound through the jack on the monitor (if I wanted to).

Spent like $8 bucks on parts, and $8 on shipping because monoprice was down when I first tried to order. oh well, no big deal. I got the all female audio adapter so it's easier . Shipping was $8 to get it to me in 2 days.

Where'd you find the all-female adapter? My preference has always been female to female too.
