PS3 Thoughts & Questions

Got my PS3 and took it for a shake down cruise this weekend. Had a couple of questions.

The model I got was the 40GB non BC $399 version.

First off, what is the difference between the wireless six axis controller it came with and the "dual shock" which is bundled with the 80gb version.

Is my 40GB model the newer "smaller die" model? Even still, I notice a good deal of heat in the TV stand compartment where my PS3 sits on the shelf under the TV cabinet. The PS3 is not enclosed (ie there is no door closing it inside a space). The space it is in is a normal spot that anyone would place a DVD player or game console. Would it be wise to put a small fan inside that space behind the PS3, to make it stay cooler and last longer?

I don't think a fan will help any, the ps3 has been carefully designed for airflow and stuff, adding fans and attaching fans messes up the airflow

The 40GB PS3 does have the smaller 65nm die. Consoles like the PS3 and 360 are going to get hot regardless but they generally manage the heat well. Just make sure if has plenty of room for proper airflow and isn't sitting directly on top of something else that is generating heat too.

I wasn't talking about modifying the case to install a computer style fan, rather I was simply suggesting a small fan be placed inside the TV stand cabinet behind the PS3 unit.

The PS3 unit does seem to have plenty of space around it, probably a good 6-inches above and behind and some 4-inches on each side. Sounds like it should be ok for ventilation. It's also some comfort knowing I have a smaller die size over the previous models, which, in theory should give the unit a little better life span.

It sounds like you've got your PS3 in the horizontal position. I would move the console more to the left so that the hot air has more space to get expelled into. There is no ventilation on the left side (bottom in vertical position). All the heat gets expelled out the back and right hand (top in vertical position) side of the console.

I moved my PS3 towards the left had side of my shelving and noticed the fan wasn't working nearly as hard during gaming and Folding@Home operations after the move.

The DS3 is heavier, feels "more sturdy", and has vibration. It is, on the whole, a superior controller.

Yes, it is using a smaller die process than the original PS3. It couldn't hurt to put a fan behind the PS3, but I doubt it'll matter terribly much. The PS3 is just hot, like your computer or the 360.

Yes, it is horizontal. I can move it around a little since there is a generous amount of space. I won't place any other devices in the same space.

I'll check out the dual shock controller. I'll probably want to get a 2nd one for multiplay purposes. I like the wireless feature and the USB charger chord.

I have the 80GB version, and it is in the horizontal position. I was surprised by how much heat the thing generates, and have moved my Wii and DVD's away from the PS3 vent.

Is it better to have it vertical for heat dissipation?
