That would be pretty awesome if a PS3 slim came out and was like $250 or so.

Oh man these times leading up to E3 are fun and full of rumors!

Sony denied the PS3 slim rumors yesterday.

If true, that would have to be a prototype or something as the pics don't come close to matching the general theme of the PS3s (ie, the logo is not prominent and shiny, the case looks dull, etc).

That was my thought, too.

I wouldn't totally rule it out, the PS3 could probably handle a smaller form-factor now that they're using a smaller die process for Cell and the GPU. I just didn't see it happening for another year...

Now come on Queasy. How long have you been a gamer? You know that doesn't mean shit. ;) :p

Heh. Look at the pictures. ;) I tend to believe Sony with this one. :)

I think this is almost certainly legit. I'll just post what someone wrote up over at Joystiq as it makes a lot of sense:

This makes perfect sense as the timeline of the PS2 slim fits this timing with the PS3. 3 years after release production stopped on the old model and the new cheaper PS2slim was manufactured during the summer, while the old stock cleared out.

The new Sony plants capable of fabbing the new 45nm Cell are about to come online next month, they need something to go into. The new Cell runs cooler, which is related to the next point.

The PS3 shell is a fucking brick because it was all v.1 tech. I opened my launch one to repair and was shocked at the gigantic heatsink array, taking up a full third of the internal space. Shots of a new MUCH smaller heatsink array leaked out months ago, that is for the new cooler Cell. Also the *universal* power supply unit takes up a quarter of the space inside. Switch to an per-region external power brick (trick the 360 and slim PS2 used) and thats even less space, and heat venting, required. Same can be said for the v.1 Blu-Ray drive, its a fucking brick and the new Sony-made ones are much cheaper and slimmer. Losing the big 3 internal units will allow them to have a PS3-slim without mods to the motherboard (which is nearly half the size of the original backwards compatible board anyway). And theres the now defunct USB and MediaCard reader ports, that original bit is a huge waste of space on the outside at the moment.

And obviously, price cut. They ain't a stupid company, they know that its time to go to a more mainstream price this holiday season, even if its just in Japan for now, this will then appeal to the Japanese who love all things slim, right in time for the FFXIII release.
This is perfectly possible and some would say inevitable this year, but they would never admit it early as people on the fence about buying one would wait till this is released.
This is probably just a test unit, you can tell by the cheaper looking plastic, while they get the fabbing plant up to speed/bugs ironed out, and workers trained, you have to make tons of those before you turn the production line up to full, no point wasting the glossy plastic on it.
I'd bet good money that this is the real deal. A thread on GAF about this is currently doing fine detective work on it, http://www.neogaf.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=361611&page=4 (NEW! Maintek have yanked the original thread!)
Sorry to waffle here but this is a news megaton thats a long time coming.

Yeah, never going to happen. You make your console cheaper, not more expensive. Only possible way it could happen at this point is in software, and Sony's shown zero interest in that.

I always thought I'd wait for the slim version before getting a PS3, but I already have one.

Are there any slim Blu-ray players on the market? This could be the slickest looking BD player yet (and it plays games!).

You 'said' yourself they look like prototype pictures. They are clearly plastic parts and not shots of a finished product. I don't think they necessarily indicate the slim's existence one way or the other, but the cardboard box is convincing (aside from the cheap "PS3" logo).

I said, "If true"...meaning I don't particularly think this is true. Even the cardboard box looks Chinese knock-off cheap to me.

But don't those Chinese knock-offs always have names like "Vii" instead of "Wii"? I mean, they're clearly knock offs, but they rarely outright use the same name and logos. That box has all the actual logos... from PS3 to PSN to Blu-Ray. Oh, and I seriously doubt any knock-off would actually have a BR drive.

[edit] I will say though that the one detail that makes me doubt the validity is the picture of the slim on the box. Why would they use a top down picture for their new slim model? Seems like it would be angled or from the side like the PS2 slim model. But then again, if you're going to all this trouble to make an elaborate hoax why would you use the top down shot instead of a side shot? I still think these are pictures of a prototype PS3 slim.

My mom went to China a month ago and she took pics of fake consoles that look like the real thing so it could very well be a fake. Here's to hoping it's not though.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... that looks like something I would buy from a dirty Chinese flea market right next to some dude hawking iPod touch knockoffs. C'mon guys, nobody can really think this is real?

I do think the PS3 slim is going to be coming sooner or later, but there's no way in hell it's going to look anything like that.

Right...because the current ps3 design is flying off the shelves and Sony raking in so much money  retooling the production line and putting out yet another sku is the best move they can do.

Well, the biggest complaint of the PS3 is price. Moving to a smaller/slimmer case with the 45nm die would reduce costs and give Sony the opportunity to drop the price to make it more competitive.

Bringing out a new case/color always excites gamers too...

Exactly. Sony doesn't make a dime on used games so it doesn't make much sense to cater to that market and new PS2 games are dropping sharply.

Why not make it capable of playing all console and PC games ever to exist @ 1080p60 w/ 8xAA while we're at it? That would pretty awesome indeed.

The system is still $400 entry level, and we're supposed to believe the R&D costs plus streamlined components aren't going to offset any minimal savings die shrinks will bring? IIRC the PS3 still costs more to produce than what it sells for...

The streamlined PS One and PS2 Slimline didn't come until each system was selling for half their initial MSRP, and that was when Sony was absolutely dominating the home console market...
