Supercomputer On A Chip Debuts
IBM, Sony, and Toshiba announced their new supercomputer on a chip, dubbed the Cell microprocessor, as part of a grand alliance to unseat Intel in computing. The companies said the chip will run at speeds greater than 4GHz and be able to process as many as 256 billion math operations per second. The chip will be used in Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console and Toshiba said it will use the chip in digital TV sets, and IBM plans to use the chip in servers and workstations. The companies say Cell chips are modular, fast enough, and so power-efficient they can be used in everything from handhelds to supercomputers.

Question is: I know eventually, AMD and Intel will catch-up/surpass this benchmark but a) any guesses as to when? b)why cant they make CPU's for desktops with this stuff?
