PS3 problems, recently?

I was in line at BestBuy and noticed that there were 4 people returning PS3s. One complained of graphical artifacts after the console was on for a while, while another said it would randomly shut off. I didn't hear the complaints of the other two.

One was a MGS4 bundle, while the others were 40GB.

Based on everything I've heard, the PS3 is reliable, but it sure seemed odd to see all the returns.

dunno never had 1 issue w/mine and i have a 60gb unit.

only thing that has sucked for me is sometime the PS3 can't play some avi files, but then the 360 seems to play them fine.

Probably idiots who put their console into a cabinet that gets no air movement at all (or exhaust area) causing it to overheat easily.

I know I played GTA one hot night and the fan speed went to full since I forgot to open the cabinet door when playing

I have the 60GB PS3 and I recommended my brother, friend and dad get the MGS4 bundle. That's 4 PS3s and they've all worked as designed from day one.

Man I hate it when I do that. But that should be fixed when I get my new stand.

Could be one of the recent problematic updates that killed a bunch of consoles. But I also suspect that the 360's RRoD was overshadowing some real issues (albeit lesser ones) with the PS3's hardware quality.

Day one? The MGS4 bundle only came out a few months ago and two months isn't much of a test I think most RROD 360s last at least that long.

Friends just died, heat related he gets some kind of error flashing code. His was a launch 60gb.

That is the only issue I have heard of personally, my 60gb is still going strong.

Sounds reasonable. Mines died (BD drive) after 29 days. Got the drive replaced after sending it back, and it has been working flawlessly for over half a year now.

The good thing is that these major failures are happening within the direct-exchange period (last time I buy a console online), so there's a good chance that if you make it past 30-90 days, you'll be good for a long time.

They may have been lying about the reason for the return, because graphical artifacts sound like a more reasonable reason to return it than "it's too loud." Apparently some of the recent PS3s have been pretty loud compared to the older ones, so people return them until they get a good one (just like when the Falcon 360s came out).

60gb US, bought it over a year ago and have been running Folding@home on it 24/7 just about ever since. No issues.

The OP mentioned an MSG4 bundle already came in defective, that's why I mentioned it. I also mentioned my 60GB PS3 and that's been going strong for a good while now (I forgot when I bought it). But my 360 Elite has been nothing shortly of perfect ever since I got it too, and I bought it on the release date. :)

lol... when I return something, the simplest thing to say is 'i'm going with microsoft, or nintendo' or w/e it is that you aren't returning and then laugh and laugh some more and flirt with the 18 year old blue eyed slut at the return counter.

Yeah, and then have sex with her right there on the customer service desk. At least that's what I usually do. But not at Best Buy, because don't they have a 15% restocking fee? If you make up some defect (which is supported by the fact that you exchange it for a new PS3), you don't have to pay a restocking fee.

I didn't realize that. Here is the full list:

A restocking fee of 15% will be charged on opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPS navigation and in-car video systems unless defective or prohibited by law.
