PS3 price cuts?

Looks like the base model will be ~$410 to $430 depending on the exchange rate and they will add HDMI to the base model.

However it hasnt been conirmed wether the price cuts are for Japan only or if they will include the US as well.

If the base model includes HDMI who would pick up the uber model for another $100? (it would only offer wifi and flash reader?)

Anyway this actually happens (HDMI & price cuts) then I think the PS3s will be a huge hit.

This would also force MS to lower prices (base xbox + hdvd drive = $479) so it would be good for everyone.

Definatly a bad sign.. if they are losing confidence now with all the press and negativity and now dropping the price on an unreleased console.. thats not a good thing at all..
means there really is some truth to everything thats being said..

They haven't even hinted the price in US will drop from $499... They seriously haven't even decided on final design decisions, let alone started manufacturing these machines yet? 2007 PS3 release here we come!

If Microsoft and Nintendo don't come out 1 and 2 this generation, I'll be VERY surprised.

That'd be awesome...I like the all-black lower-end unit more. The more expensive one has card readers, wifi, and a bigger hard drive, all of which I don't need.

This won't help them get enough stock out for 2006 and by the time it is available, regardless of the price. I'll be Wii-deep in the only console I plan on buying this round, though I will likely reconsider when the other two start hitting the $150-$200 price point in 2-3 years.

I liked how Yossarian put it in another thread:

I have plenty of disposable income to cover the cost of the PS3, but eff them for thinking they can have my money for forcing a new format down my throat. I personally hope that this round ends with an even 33.3% market share amongst all three companies and we start seeing some good, cheap, innovative gaming from all of them.

Seems like Sony has been reading Anandtech. It's interesting they haven't announced any price cuts for the US. I'll assume they wouldn't be stupid enough to screw us over like that. Dropping it in Japan but not here would make me even less willing to buy one than if they didn't drop the price anywhere.

If they do this they better not make too many of the higher end model, because no one is going to be buying it.

Keep in mind that Sony has already announced that only 20% of the PS3s they produce will be the lower-end model. So, that one would be extremely hard to find in Japan and the US.

This is the smartest thing Sony has done with the PS3 in a while. Hopefully, they don't turn it into something monumentally stupid by not offering the price cut and HDMI in other regions.

ok, so the price won't drop across the board, but will that HDMI connector be there worldwide on the base model?

Haven't seen any confirmation yet but one would hope so...

Anyone know if the games will be the same price as Xbox 360 games???

So far the games are looking like $60 but Krazy Ken intimated that they could go as high as $100 so who knows what that is all about.

Is any place taking pre-orders yet?

EBGames and Gamestop have pretty much said no pre-orders for the PS3. They're only expecting to get a handful of units per store at launch and don't want to create the feeding frenzy that happened last year.

All FYEs that I know of have already said they filled up their preorder slots.

Best bet will probably be to camp out.

I went to a FYE with a friend and we got in on the pre-order. A worker at one of the store told us there was some a-hole who put down a pre-order for 6+ units so that's why most of the pre-order slots are filled.

That is FYE's fault for not having a 1 unit pre-order limit.
