ps3 potential question.

Is MGS4 as good as the ps3 gets? I read and heard tons of things about the game using up everything the ps3 had to offer, now I read it's only half the potential or less. I don't know what to believe it's just a bunch of malarkey.

Obviously we won't know for a few more years. Maybe they improve, maybe they don't, how can we possibly know now?

I dunno, 360 games haven't really improved much over the years since launch. They have but not by a long shot.

I think MGS4 uses about 70-80% if you ask me.

Malarkey is a dude from Band of Brothers.

What you are reading is crap!

Anyone who tries to tell you how much more potential performance they can get out of it is full of it. It's not as if all this untapped power is just sitting there waiting for someone to find the right command to unlock it. It's all about writing more efficient code and writing code that effectively uses the SPEs.

Sure they have. Look at Saints Row and compare it to GTA IV or the gameplay videos of Saints Row 2. It's hard to quantify, but I think there is a clear improvement in the graphics from launch to now.

^^^ Completely agree with mugs.

It's pretty much impossible to quantify how much "additional untapped power" there is in either system. Both systems have plenty of power to make great games (both in how they play and how they look). As developers put out further generations of games, they will evolve new, more efficient code. The only way you can really judge things like that are after the fact. Sure, 10 years from now, we can agree on the "most advanced" game for the platform and compare it to earlier gen games... but really what's the point... who cares!

I'd also disagree with the statement that the 360 games haven't improved. Hell, in addition to the example mugs gave, look at Gears vs the trailers for Gears 2 (and that huge battle with tons of baddies on the screen).

I don't know, was MGS2 as good as the PS2 got?

The obvious answer is no. I don't think any of the modern consoles have reached their potential yet. That takes years. Just look at God of War; man, what polish those games have. Compare it to any of the titles on the PS2 after 1.5 years and there are leagues of difference. The 360 and the PS3 are still maturing.

If ps3 is not using it's full potential why do some games have framerate issues? Is it all because of bad code?

Some games like GTA4 lag sometimes, so I think the ps3 is already having troubles advancing. GTA4 runs fine until you hit something with more than one part or go around some corners fast.

Pretty much. As devs get more comfortable with the system, they'll be able to be more efficient with their code. So far though, most devs aren't there yet.

This goes double for multi-plats that don't have the PS3 as the lead system.
