ps3 media over wifi

Hi guys, I have a ps3 slim and im using windows 7 pro and I'm having problems with watching .mkv and almost all the other file types. Problems being stuttering, abrupt random stops, and unsynchronized voice and picture.

im using i7-920 and 1TB sata. 6gb ram.

programs im using are Java PS3 media server and Tversity. I installed Tversity's codec pack and shark007's windows 7 codec pack.

Please help. this is getting very frustrating.
 
More than likely, you aren't getting enough bandwidth to the PS3. It's only got b/g wifi, so the amount of bandwidth available AT MAX is around 45Mbit/s. (counting a bit of the overhead on the protocol)

If you're running an MKV file that is not encoded properly (I'm assuming x264...), then PS3MS will convert it to MPEG2, which uses an enormous amount of bandwidth. Even 720p MKV stuff will be pushing 30-40Mbit/s in any intense scenes. That is MORE than enough to max out the wifi and make it stutter like crazy.

In general, any conversion will make it use a ton of bandwidth. You don't have computer problems, you have LAN bandwidth problems. Switch over to the ethernet port on your PS3, and I guarantee your stuttering will all but disappear.
 
what kirby said, i had the same issues running it over wifi, went to wired and it works flawlessly
 
Going wired is best. If it's absolutely not an option, then buy a wireless N bridge and wireless N router.
 
I'll co-sign on the above; I ran my PS3 over wifi for a long time and finally got tired of the stuttering on higher resolution content so switched to gigabit over CAT6 and haven't had an issue since. Another aspect which really shows the difference is when you fast forward / rewind over streaming content.

I thought the PS3 was only 100Mb.
 
Wireless is flaky and noise or interference are the likely problems. Change channels on the router to 1, 6 or 11 to see what works best and try to eliminate other sources of 2.4 Ghz noise like phones, bluetooth, microwaves...oh and your neighbors and all their wireless devices because those cause you problems as well.
 
Even 1080p over N still won't work most of the time, I fought with that for weeks before admitting defeat and just buying an Asus OPlay and wiring it into my router.
HD takes a TON of bandwidth, and unless you're within a few feet of your wireless router, you're not getting close to the max throughput of that wireless spec.
 
well my desktop is on the first floor with my router with wired connection. Any other ways to make wired connection to my ps3 on the second floor without dragging a huge long line going around the edges of the floor all the way to the second floor? Reason being its ugly and i don't think my parents would allow that.
 
You could also try a wireless N bridge and upgrade the router to N as well if it isn't already N. I have a media center PC hardwired to an N router upstairs and downstairs, I have an N bridge with an Xbox 360 connected to it. I can flawlessly stream movies off of my media center PC and Netflix streaming works fine as well.
 
ya that is a little over my budget. so the cheapest way would be just drag the ethernet line all the way from my router to 2nd floor and try to conceal it under the carpet?

Yes. I believe you can run the cable through the wall, which would obviously make for a cleaner run.
 
kk thanks a lot guys. appreciate all the help. I did remember one thing tho....

Couple months back when Sherlock Holmes was released I had no problem streaming it on my ps3. No stuttering or watever and it was 1080p too...wonder how that happened...
 
What was the source for Sherlock Holmes? Was it an MKV file just like the ones you're having problems with now?
 
Do you still have that exact file (or at least one that's similar)? If there are some formats that stream flawlessly in spite of being the same file size, resolution, and level of compression, then that would be helpful to know.
 
I think the wireless NIC in the PS3 just sucks and/or the PS3's media player sucks at buffering. I've complained about this same issue several times, except I'm just trying to stream low bitrate divx files, nothing HD or anything crazy like that. Everyone said it must be inadequate bandwidth on my wireless network or some configuration problem with my network or the server.

I tried two different media servers, three different routers with four different firmwares in two different physical locations (one being on the same floor and just down the hall from the room with the PS3). Nothing worked. Here's the thing though - I've never had an issue with a lack of wireless bandwidth to my Apple TV, Roku box, laptops, or even Xbox 360 in the same location, streaming the same or roughly equivalent content. Half the time my PS3 can't even figure out that I have a media server on my network.

I blame the PS3. I gave it everything I could!

The PS3's built in wifi has a lot of lag. I found that it does stream SD content just find but tends it takes forever to initially launch the video. I switched to wired and it solved the problem. You can use a wireless bridge. Since my PC and PS3 are in the same room, I just bought a gigabit switch.
 
btw guys. my house has a lot of ......plugs that is both ethernet and phoneline. Is it possible that i can run a line to the wall plug and connect a line from the wall plug to my ps3?

That should work

And as stated above Wifi blows for streaming, i had to go wired to stream even 720p without skipping/stuttering
