While OpenGL in itself is not a complete SDK like Direct X, using a familiar rendering technology could prove to be a very good move for Sony to ease development on the PS3. Microsoft definitely has an edge with Xbox development over PS2 development...especially when comparing what was available to the programmer at the inception of the consoles. The PS2 had nearly nothing and was very difficult to program for. Companies were made just to create tools to develop on the PS2 while the Xbox already had a nice development platform with the DirectX 8 SDK.

Looks like Sony may have learned form this and will try to release the PS3 with a similar SDK.

(this may not be an off topic thread...but I didn't think it fell neatly into Software or Hardware...)

Edit: Forgot to include link...

From what I've read, developers are loving the new XBOX dev kits and find it very easy to use. Sony def. needs to improve upon this because they might not have the HUGE market and install advantage they enjoyed this time around.

Yeah... I have heard the new XNA development platform is quite teh stuff. Seems like Microsoft has quite a jump on Sony with this. This might help some Microsoft deliver some quality games early on in the Xbox Next's life cycle. This could really help them get a jump start on Sony. If you remember, the PS2 did not have quality games for quite a while.
