With using HDMI CEC is limited by TV remote options right? I can't add PS3 commands?

So I'd need either need the Harmony IR-Bluetooth device.

Or any USB dongle that comes with PS3 remotes?

If I used the USB dongle could I then just add PS3 from the Harmony database?

Can I add the PS3 commands and have them work through the TVs CEC function?

Just wondering.

Also will any usb dongle work like this one: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10830&cs_id=1083003&p_id=7668&seq=1&format=2

I want to help you but I don't understand a single thing you said.

You own a Harmony remote?

HDMI CEC allows you to use the PS3 with the TV remote. If control for hdmi is turned on the PS3.

USB dongle allows IR remotes to be used on the PS3. Usually the remote comes with the dongle. This usually allows more button commands & options.

Logitech also sells an IR-Bluetooth device. Thus making the Harmony remote act like a Bluetooth remote.

The Harmony database has remote commands for the PS3. However I don't know if it will work with an IR-USB dongle or just the IR-Bluetooth device.

You also can add the commands of the remote that came with the IR-USB dongle to the database and such too.

With Hdmi CEC I don't know if you can add additional commands. Usually all that is offered if rewind,fast-forward seeking and play and pause and such.

The only real issue is lack of the PS button usually found on the controller.

I believe you need a specific USB dongle for the PS3, not just any generic one that comes with any remote. When I was looking at remotes, the one I determined I had to buy was like $50 by itself, and then the cheapest Harmony remote was around $70. Total ripoff in my mind.

I bought this and have been completely happy with it. Runs all my devices (Onkyo A/V, Panny plasma), and is made specifically for the PS3 so it works flawlessly.

I already own the Harmony 650 and yes you can use any usb dongle. However right now I am using my PS3 through my TV with HDMI CEC. I can do everything but exit certain channels like Netflix as only the PS button can exit it.

I believe the PS3 only supports power-on and power-off through HDMI-CEC. The Logitech Harmony PS3 adapter is complete and utter trash in my opinion. It has known issues with causing bluetooth interference with the PS3 and actually causing it to make it so that NO PS3 controller can even connect to the PS3. So beware of this.

I think newer ones have new firmware that doesn't cause this issue, but the old ones are still out in the stores sitting on shelves and for some reason Logitech put no way of updating the firmware in these products.

There are other options out there that do the same thing the Logitech adapter claims to do without causing these issues. One I was aware of is the IR2BT, but it doesn't look like they're being made anymore. My suggestion is to do a search for the IR2BT and see what other products people compare them to, then buy those products!

Ugh thanks Sony. Not like a simple IR port would have been that hard to add....

The only real pain in the ass is if I use Vudu or Netflix for 1080p content. I can't exit! Only the PS button on the controller will do it. Erg.

Yeah, that's the one thing that pisses me off about the PS3 - no IR inputs. This is why my PS3 is relegated to playing only games - I don't use it at all for streaming as a BD player.

This happened to me. I bought one off a store shelf and it kept causing my controllers to disconnect. But Logitech replaced it for free and it works fine now. Keep in mind that that was a year ago, so I doubt there are many with the old firmware still on shelves.

I haven't had any problems with my Logitech PS3 Harmony adapter. Didn't even know the problems that Syborg mentioned existed.

How long have you had the adapter? Chances are you would have seen the issue almost immediately, so you likely have a model with the fixed firmware. When I first hooked up the adapter I had problem within the first day or two. My controllers wouldn't sync at least half the time and sometimes, even when they would sync, they would randomly de-sync while playing. Also, the Harmony adapter itself would often stop working. It would power on the PS3, but then stop communicating with the PS3 from that point forward.
