ps3 hard drive upgrade

I upgraded my ps3 hard drive from 40gb to a 250gb one.

I don't mind the conversion.

system info shows I have 205GB free space out of 235GB.

I have no clue what took up 30GB of space. I haven't downloaded any demos or anything yet.

Is the ps3 confused or something? or did it reserve 30gb like as if it was a 40GB still in there.

Keep in mind, about 15 to 20 GB of space will be taken up by the PS3 for system use, so do not be alarmed when the HDD space measurement comes up short.

No wonder they have to get rid of the 20gb version then.

So do firmware upgrades update the firmware on the console itself or do they read directly from the HDD? So basically if you start out with a 1.0 PS3, upgrade the firmware to 2.0, remove the HDD, will you revert back to 1.0 because it resides on the HDD?

i dont know if this is completely true, i have the 20gb version and had the 20gb in there for quite some time and the system only seemed to use about 2gb. I had 10 for linux and 8.something for downloads/installs.

Just from the estimates you and the OP provided, it sounds like Hans might have the right idea in that the PS3 stakes a claim to a specified percentage for system use.

From the numbers used: (30 of 235GB) and (2 of 20GB). Somewhere around 10-12% would seem like the case.

I bet they use a percentage of the HDD on the PS3 as a page file that's why it increases with drive size.

that doesnt make sense to me, i doubt there is any pagefile at all. more likely it is overhead on thier filesystem format.

Did you say overhead? you've gotta be shitting me, if that was overhead, I'd crap my pants, and remove my intestines because that would completely question all logic and reason, negating my purpose on this plane.
