PS3 "Hacked"

That article makes hacking look all magical and shit. It's BBC though, not a real tech or engineering website for news.

As I understand it, no, he didn't get direct access to the graphics system. However, he is able to get access to protected memory space, which I assume is a roundabout method. At that point, can probably insert code to be picked up by any program Sony left running in that space. Without details on the PS3 architecture it's simply conjecture.

Why do people keep asking this? It's purely an official Linux install thing. Properly breaking the security on the PS3 would, de facto, get you access to all the hardware on the system.

Fortunately/unfortunately, the hack seems to have a couple of limitations:
1. Doesn't work on PS3 Slim (no Linux mode, which seems to be required)
2. Requires a very simple hardware modification
3. Doesn't seem terribly reliable atm ("load kernel module, mash button, pray it doesn't crash in a not so good way")

This guy is basically saying this hack amounts to nothing. Basically the guy broke down the first wall of a 5 wall fortress

The unbreakable wall? The SPU. Apparently its isolated so that no hardware or software method can reach it and without accessing that isolated SPU nothing can be done even with this "exploit" because that SPU still is keeping everything encrypted.

Not necessarily the main purpose...or maybe it is, I dunno.

I'll have to wait and see what types of PS3s it works on when it's out. Maybe the hack only works for older PS3s and not Slims. I dunno. Going to keep holding off buying though.

Did he even mention running any illegal code? Until then, this news is just entertainment.

a full on crack would obv lead to game rips etc, but IIRC, a lot of these types of people do it because they're not meant to. guess doing a crossword puzzle in the morning wasn't enough for em 😱

personally, i believe that a big reason even this exploit took this long was because what was the point before? before BD burners, or before they were priced low enough (same for the media) then it wouldn't matter anyway really - barr the intellectual challenge of course.
