PS3 firmware issue with blu-ray

So a couple of months ago Sony came out with a firmware update for the PS3 that among other things added 3D support. 3D support is more or less irrelevant to most consumers right now, but whatever. Anyway, the firmware update broke one movie so that it always shows PIP commentary whenever you play it, and I don't think it happens on just the PS3 either, I've heard it happens on other Sony players. Sunshine, which to me is one of the best examples of what an HD movie should look and sound like. My favorite blu-ray that I own. And Sony doesn't care. A Sony rep stated that it's the publisher's fault, not theirs.

So just keep it in mind if you own a PS3, or want to get one for a blu-ray player, and like this movie. I haven't heard about other broken movies, but wouldn't surprise me if they are out there. The whole PIP function apparently has other issues too.

Really, Sony told you the weren't looking for a fix? They seem to be very responsive. It may be true that they didn't cause the problem, but I bet they release a firmware with a work around.

(This coming from someone who doesn't buy / consider Sony anymore. Out of the 10 Sony products I've owned since 1990, only 2 didn't fail within 6 months of the warranty ending...one of those was the PS3 which I sold before the warranty was up).

I have always liked the playstations, but the mostly useless firmware updates on the PS3 finally did more harm than good and it's pretty upsetting. Apparently they are just going to blame the publisher for an issue that is clearly caused by their 3D support update.

My brother finally decided to pop this movie into the PS3 last night. The PIP behind-the-scenes stuff came on and there was no way to disable it. A quick Google search indicates there was a recall/exchange program for the improperly mastered discs. The program is probably long expired though.

What's more is that we only updated the PS3 past the old Linux-compatible firmware because it stopped being able to play blu-ray movies, new and old, once the old AACS keys were revoked/expired. Sony lied when they said that you didn't have to update to retain existing functionality. At first it was only newer movies which had the AACS key issue but some disc must have somehow invalidated the stored keys so it started throwing the same error for older discs, even after setting the date back.
