VG247 is reporting that PS3 Firmware 3.0, to be released later this year before Christmas, will be a huge overhaul to the PS3 OS.

The updates include a reputation system for gamers, a 'grief reporting' system where you can take screenshots of griefers and submit complaints similar to the system used in LBP, patch downloads that occur in the background, simultaneous HDMI and digital optical output, and lots more still unannounced. The amount of changes has been compared to the changes on the 360 brought with the NXE update.

Yeah, this won't be abused

Huh? As in outputting sound through HDMI and optical at the same time? Why would you want to do this?

I think its pretty nice actually. Some games I play I don't really care about the sound, and would rather listen to music or something (Madden, other sports games, various mindless puzzle type PSN games, etc). This way I can have my HT system playing something else, and have the HDMI going to my TV on with a lower volume, rather than off completely.

Some people have receivers which don't have HDMI, but have TVs which do have HDMI. This will allow those people to actually use the HDMI input on their TV, which could be helpful if they're low on component inputs.

Also, reputation, as it's implemented on the 360, seems kinda worthless. Most everyone is five stars.

I can't think of much in the FW that needs fixing offhand.. One thing that drives me nuts ( mostly on the PSP), I want to be able to play a MP3 while doing other things (playing a game, looking at por..err pictures, etc.)

Some new features would be nice, Netflix, Hulu, MKV/H264 support. ( I realize none of those will happen)

Yeah, the five star system is kind of useless but I like the reporting functionality. You can essentially tell Live that you don't want to play with a certain player anymore because their being a douche online and you'll never be matched up with them again.

Hey, while we're wishing, I want a PSP emulator for my PS3. It makes no sense that I can download those games but not play them.

This is how I have my 360 hooked up. HDMI to my HDMI splitter to the TV and Toslink to the 5.1 Receiver.

FYI you can do this with the Play On software. If you connect remotely to your PS3 you can access these features.

This will be great, my wife won't be calling me when I'm at work cussing out the PS3. She can never get the sound to work, she doesn't understand my receiver.

As in having the video output set to HDMI (to TV) and sound output set to optical (for receiver)? If that's the case, you can already do this.

However, I really feel like I'm thinking of something different than everyone else.

HDMI video + optical audio has worked since 2006, so this must mean sending the audio out to both connections at once.

Yeah, PSP needs a XMB over-haul. It's also really slow compared to the XMB on the PS3.

My TV has optical out, so I just run HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and then optical from the TV to the sound system (not a true receiver) and voila! :)

I still don't think peritusONE's original statement has been answered (as far as I've read to this point). The description makes it sound like people would simultaneously output the sound from the PS3 via both HDMI and optical, but what's the need to do so? If it's the same sound feed, why output it simultaneously over to interconnects?

Ok, I get it. You can use the TV speakers with the HDMI hookup and use the optical cable for the receiver if you want. Or, you could just RTFM and learn how to use a receiver.

As has been said so you can have sound out of your TV or your receiver without having to mess with settings on the PS3.

Isn't component also limited to 1080i for BD content? I would imagine it doesn't support HDCP. Therefore having this makes a lot of sense for 1080p TV owners with older receivers.

I tried it out.. Seemed a little buggy for my taste.

PS3 media server works ok for the MKV's, but I am on wireless so it can get a bit choppy sometimes. I have Netflix on the 360, it works wonderfully.. Would love to see something similar with Hulu, on either console actually, but as I understand it, the content providers dont want to see hulu on set-tops.

I've got PlayOn routed through both my 360 and PS3.....prefer the PS3 because it is so much more quiet. I think I read somewhere where the stream is capped at 4 mbps, which is what my PS3 is reporting when I hit the display key. In any case, PlayOn works great, very good video quality on good sources.....only hassle I've had was getting my Norton Internet Security firewall to cooperate.

Still waiting on the features of 3.0 that deem the use of 'huge overhaul'. These are just upgrades or small patches.
