PS3 dvd upscaling problem

I tried playing Tombstone DVD in my PS3 last night, and the picture was in a rectangular box in the middle of the screen as if I'm watching 1:1 scaling. I had to turn upscaling off for it to show full screen with black bars top and bottom. I checked the aspect ratio from the box and it says 2.35:1. All the 16:9 WS DVD I watched so far are fine.

So is it normal that upscaling won't work for theatrical WS ratio like 2.35:1? or there's some settings I missed?

P.S. my TV is a 720p/1080i Vizio 37".
 
Can you try another 2.35:1 DVD?

Looks like some versions of Tombstone were non-Anamorphic and that may be screwing things up?

I think you are right even though i don't know what it means. I tried a couple newer 2.35:1 movies and they look just fine.

I was going crazy trying to get a non-anamorphic version of Boondock Saints to look right on my projector a couple weeks ago.

In the process, I had turned the DVD player zoom setting to 102% and for a couple days I was trying to figure out wtf happened to my setup where everything look like crap suddenly.

I finally figured it out going through one my most confusing settings menu navigation systems I have on my Panasonic S77 DVD player.

I decided to get Boondock Saints from Netflix to see if they had a newer version than the one I had and it looked beautiful again 😛
