"Cnet is reporting that a research report issued by Merrill Lynch suggests that the Sony PlayStation 3's American release may be postponed until 2007. From the article: 'The analyst firm proposed the idea that high costs and Sony's decision to use an 'ambitious new processor architecture--the Cell' is making it look like the company might not be able to meet its goal of getting the PS3 out in the U.S. this year.' Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment." The official report (pdf) would also seem to indicate that the console will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $900 when it launches.

There are a couple of threads on this already, but Sony's cost is probably more like $600-700 and it will be sold at a loss so retail price could still be $400-500.

CNN is saying Summer for Japan and Xmas for the US.

I didnt see the other threads, I did search.

Regular Search is apparently even more broken after the update, though that seems unpossible 🙂

Advanced Search seems to be working OK though.

I'm curious as to why you think that ?

I'm guessing because there is no way on earth the blu-ray drive costs anywhere near $350 to make.

The price of the Cell CPU also seemed inflated to me, but who knows, it is a 7-core CPU and all.

 remember Sony only needs a blu-ray bare data drive, the expensive logic board to decode and display HD is replaced by the PS3's CPU/GPU.

I dunno, I haven't bought a console since the first nintendo...but I have followed them. Seems to me that if Sony prices their console that unreasonably high, then they're going to seal their demise this round. Whether or not they have the latest and greatest features, I just don't see parents shelling out that much ('en masse, not the fruitcakes who'll purchase an Xbox 360 for $1300 on ebay) for a piece of gaming hardware. Especially if the 360 has established a lot of good games by then and had a chance to make improvements/work out any problems. Also, if nintendo's solution is going to be sold at a low price (target of $200 last I'd heard, though that could've changed).

So, come Xmas time '06, a parent might end up having the option to purchase two consoles, both that'll have great games and selling points, or one unproven uber-console...all for the same price.
