PS3 Cooling

I have an older 60GB PS3 and it's been freezing midway through movies due to overheating. I tried setting it horizontal in a well ventilated area, but it still has trouble making it through an entire movie.

Does anyone know if any of the PS3 coolers actually work? I've heard the intercooler and such are actually pretty terrible and I was wondering if anyone knew of any that actually did any good so I don't have to put the old girl down...

It could be dust buildup inside, if you don't want to pay Sony $170 for a repair (60 GB costs more now 🙁 ) you can google for how to open it up and clean it.

Most likely you need to change the thermal paste. It's fairly well documented that the 90nm units are too hot, so the TIM dries up and the heat warps the motherboard. There's a long thread in hardforums about it, but I can't find it ATM. There's a link to a tutorial in this thread.

edit: The TIM dries up because it's a crappy ceramic, not b/c the units are too hot. Sorry if that was unclear.

Do people get banned on that forum frequently? I saw like 3 or 4 people in that thread with "banned" next to their name.

I generally only browse hardforums when their threads come up in google searches. Maybe the ban stick is strong with the mods. 😀
