PS3 controllers

Anyone recommend a good 3rd party controller? I hate this thing. The sticks are too loose and too close together, don't like the knobs on them much either. The d-pad is actually where the left stick should be. The r/l triggers are designed in such a way that when you press them it feels like your finger is slipping off.

Yup, sounds like you have a predetermined, biased view of what a controller should be.

I agree it does sound that way...but I have to say that I prefer the 360 controller way more than the PS3/PS2 controller. I definitely had gotten used to a PS2 controller over the years. I liked the original Xbox controller (S version), but didn't like the white and black buttons and the ergonomics weren't exactly right. When the 360 controller came out...I started to realize how poorly designed (at least for my hands and FPS games) the PS2 and now the PS3 controller is. I hate the idea of going back. Part of me wants to wait for a 3rd party controller that more closely mimics the feel and consistency of the 360 controller before I buy a PS3.

Have you used the PS3 controller?

I got my PS3 last night and I am going to have to agree 110% with the OP. I felt the same exact way as he did.

When I press the L2/R2 buttons, I have to hold the rest of the controller harder because it feels like it's going to slip out of my hands. Also the controller is too damn light. When using both analog sticks, my damn thumbs touch.

I would definitely prefer a different layed out controller.

Yeah I am more accustomed to the 360 controller..

I don't understand why the d-pad is in the primary position though.. Do people still prefer that over a stick? I can understand it for fighting games, but pretty much every other type of game I prefer the stick. That's really my biggest complaint, the other things are annoying but could probably grow on me.

Maybe I just need to retrain my thumb

Oh don't get me wrong, I like the 360 controller more, but I don't dislike the PS3 controller. I've never had the problem with it slipping, but I have long, gangly fingers :p (I was a fan of the classic "bear" controllers on the original Xbox.)

I never really had much of an issue with the PS2 controllers (EDIT: in terms of their layout or usability), although I own five and all are broken in some way. The most common issue is part of the L2 or R2 button breaking off and rattling around in the controller. Those things are cheap PsOS (p-sauce).

Same here, I switch back and forth between systems + don't notice the difference too much.

I do miss rumble on PS3 though.

That being said, I dont think I have even seen any 3rd party controllers for PS3 yet. Does sony have the interface locked down like MS does on wireless ?

I dont like the analog sticks being offset, i have a hard time finding true left, right, up, down like that because i actually hold the controller crooked.

I definitely get cramps from the L2 R2 buttons and your fingers do slip off!! try any racing game with those being the gas..

Overall I used to kill for the ps2 controller, and the ps3 controller is more of the same..if you could take the high points of each controller and mash them together you would have a winner! I like the buttons and the D pad on the ps3 controller 100 times better, but the sticks and triggers (bumpers need a little work...) on the 360 are great...

should make a super PlayBox controller!

I'm one of those who used to think the dual shock was the pinnacle of controller greatness, until I started using the 360 controller. I hate going back to the dual shock now.

Are you kidding me? The 360/Xbox controller is just a modified copy of the PS2 controller (and Dreamcast as well, it seems). I don't understand why you'd want the analogs separated, and the D-pad where it is on the 360 controller.

If anything I've felt the 360/Xbox controller to be much harder (and too bulky) to use compared to the PS2/PS3 controller. The L2/R2 is arguable on the PS3 controller...I don't mind it, but I can see why others wouldn't.

I've played on all of the systems...I really don't prefer any of them for games. I just feel the PS2/3 has the design that makes more sense.

You're just too used to the 360/Xbox controller.

Perhaps because with todays games, the primary control scheme is left analog stick and buttons. Therefore, the natural thumb locations when holding a controller should have these. D-pad used to be king, now most games (except fighters), simply use the d-pad as additional buttons rather than control/movement.

Simply put, the PS1/2/3 controller is outdated and needs an updated layout to meet todays gaming needs =p

There are multiple people in this thread who were much more used to the PS2 controller than anything Xbox (myself included) and we all seem to prefer the 360 controller more. The only type of game where the PS2/PS3 controller may be better is fighting games. For racing, platformers, and especially FPS style games, the layout of the 360 controller along with the 100X better feel of the analog sticks makes all the difference in the world to me.

This is of course a thing of preference and purely subjective...but I really have not met a single person in real life who has told me the prefer the feel of the PS2/PS3 controller. They may say that they are more used to the PS2 control layout, but will agree that the 360 controller is better. Really, Sony should have continued their idea to redo their controller instead of listening to all the whiners and keep it the same.

I agree. I like the weight of the PS controller, the texture of the sticks (not shape), and the d-pad.

I absolutely hate the d-pad on the 360, I would take an NES d-pad over that piece of crap.
