I have played PC games for years. I bought a PS3 and the controller is not very friendly. How long does it take to get used to these things?

I want my mouse keyboard and joystick back!!! :)

I find the controller to be superior in all games except for RTS games.

Yes, even for FPS games.

I think some games on the PS3 allow you to use a USB mouse and keyboard.

UT3, for example. I don't know of any others off the top of my head.

i never gotten used to the D pad. and I prefer the concave shape of the 360 controller over the convex shape of the PS3. but, your question seems to ask how long it takes to get over and use the joystick in games that generally would be played with keyboard and mouse. then the answer is:

never.

I agree with ivan2. If you're already used to Kb/mouse for FPSs, you're likely never going to be satisfied with using two analog sticks.

That said, the dual shock controller is my favorite when it comes to all other console games from driving to fighting and beyond.. Just not FPSs.

Yes, even for FPS games.

How could a controller possibly considered superior to KB/mouse for FPS?
At best, I could see it being equal, but even that's a bit of a stretch (IMO)

Yeah, all that means is you're not very good with keyboard and mouse. I play FPSes a lot with my friends on the 360 and I'm very good - almost always first in COD4 or Halo, but it's still nothing compared to a mouse.

And the PS3 controller sucks, period. You can buy other controllers for it, and there's also an adapter for 360 controllers..but it's like $40.

I'm sure there are so pretty good people with console controllers at FPS's, but there is no way they could match a well played keyboard/mouse setup. Not even close really.

I've heard some people claim it, but I vehemently disagree.

Maybe its just me sucking with the gamepad, but I've been playing console FPS games for a long time - and I go CONSIDERABLY better in PS3 UT3 with the keyboard/mouse than the gamepad. I go from a middle-of-the-pack player to dominant. I consider myself ok with the gamepad - I hold my own in other FPS games - I think it goes to show that the KB+M is just inherently superior.

Seeing as many console FPS's have some kind of autoaim to assist the players cus it's very difficult to be accurate with the very small joysticks on any console controller but they're great for fighting games and action games.

I love the DualShock controllers.

I've found one game that has required me to use two fingers at the same time on one side of shoulder buttons (L1 and L2, for Killzone 2), and it pisses me off and feels kind of uncomfortable. For that style of controller layout, my hand is a little to big and my hand tends to cramp up. Thankfully, in an official release of incoming patch news for the next K2 patch, they mentioned more control options as something they are looking into for the patch after next (next patch is 1.21 iirc, and the control options might be in the patch after that).

However, no other game that I play has required that, and in that sense all normal control layouts I have found extremely comfortable on the PS3 controller. Perfect size if using a good control layout.

I'd much prefer FPS gaming to be on my PS3, and that's why all multiplatform games, period, I pick up for the PC and use KB&M. But, all games other than FPS I prefer using a controller and have used a cheap Logitech dualshock-style controller to create comfort and ease.
I'll of course play the hit FPS games on the PS3, for the ones that are only PS3 or only multi-console and not on PC. For that I just forget I prefer KB&M and figure that, since everyone else has to use the controller, no big deal, and since I cannot either, might as well just adjust and enjoy.

to the OP: any particular genre you are playing on the PS3 that you are having problems with?

personally for me, I think kb/m will always better for accuracy, especially for FPS games. I've been a PC gamer for a relatively long time, and only recently started playing FPS on consoles when COD4 came out.

so is that the problem you are having? trying to play FPS? because I can't imagine you having problems trying to play a platformer or rpg.

it does take some time to get use to it, but I can tell you that the PS3 controllers are excellent controllers, light, durable and hold the charge for a long time. the comfort is all relative of course, and you'll adjust your holding and button configurations to suit your hands. My hands are inbetween a L and XL, so I always thought the PS3 controllers were on the small side, and I was wishing for a bigger controller or a xbox 360 controller. Well, when I got the 360, the 360 controller wasn't that much better. for me, the PS3 controller seems to put my hand in a weird position, but I'm very accurate and can play for a long time. The 360 controller is more comfortable initially, but my middle, ring and pinky fingers hurt after a few hours due to the shape of the wings.

But the whole discussion isn't which controller is better, but how long it takes to get use to right? I say if you stop gaming on the PC, and only play the PS3 for a month, you should be fine. Especially play a FPS. You'll hate it for the first few days, but you'll get use to it. If you play multiplayer, you'll come in the bottom half, don't worry about it, just keep playing. If you played everyday, I think by the 2nd or 3rd week, bump up the sensitivity, and keep bumping it up until you don't have really good control, then bump it down so you have good control again. By the 3rd to 4th week, your muscle memory and intuition will take over and I think you'll hold your own. You'll develop your own way of how to aim, and how to move the reticule over to your target, either by slowly moving the stick over a few degrees or by scooting over little by little, and then a combination of the two. On average it takes 21 days for something to become a habit, so I say a month to your question.

I now game about 80% of consoles and 20% on PC. My PC is decent with a 4870 and 3.8 ghz, so it's not like I don't game on it because it can't handle it. It's just more comfortable for me and being in a relaxed and reclined position to play, instead of sitting on my computer chair with both arms on the desk with kb in one hand and mouse in the other. I have L4D on PC, but will use the gamepad when playing co-op and usually come 1st or 2nd in the stats, but will switch to kb/m when I play versus. So it's all about comfort and enjoyment.

I don't have a problem with it, but I've been using that style since the first playstation. Play a more adventure-styled game like God of War (if your PS3 has backwards compatibility that is) and you'll start to get a feel for it. Actually, the controls in Resistance (the first one) feel pretty good after maybe the first hour of play.

KB/M will always be better for FPS games.

It took me a little while, but I the PS3 controller really has grown on me, to the point I wouldn't use anything else.

Thanks for all the replies! I have played some COD4 I just have a very difficult time aiming and being steady on a target. I can run fine and move but my shooting sucks. I get frustrated!

I know the feeling, took me ~12 hours of CoD:W@W to get any good with the PS3 controller. I HATED it for the first few hours, but once I played around with the sensitivity I found out it wasn't as bad as I had originally thought.
