PS3 connects online even if you don't log into PSN?

Ever since the 2/29/2010 issue, I've been watching some aspects of my PS3. I noticed that even if you don't log into PSN nor connect to a game online or syncing anything, by just turning it on and having a cable plugged or wifi defined, it is connecting/connected to some server..

I see connection entries in my DIR-655's log, but I can't see what IP they are going to.

Does anyone have the slightest what servers those are?

AFAIK, this has been the case since well before the latest issue. I noticed a long time ago that I was able to download an update to a game without logging into PSN. Also, the notification message scroll in the upper right corner is active without having to log in.

Yeah ive noticed that the message scrolling thing appears updated and also when i popped in GTA IV for the first time it auto prompted for a patch. all without being logged in. All features i like thats for sure. Wish i could download demos without having to be logged in as well but o well
