PS3 best resolution graphics?

I was just looking at reviews for some PS3 games and several I was looking at - the screen shots were gorgeous on my 19-inch computer monitor. Will they look really good on a 46-inch 1080P LCD TV (Samsung LN46A650)? What is the best possible display resolution etc?

I am buying the PS3 mainly for Bluray but might as well pick up a couple games to enjoy since it is latest gen console.

Set it to 1080p, though many games will actually just be 720p upscaled (same on the xbox).

The PlayStation store has dozens of downloadable demos so you can try out games before spending the $60.

FYI, Netflix rents almost every blu-ray disc released in the US so you don't need to buy them.

Awesome!

I looked at Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank. Both looked very nice games which I think would be fun to play. I"m not into the Army or shooting type games much.

Thanks for the tip on Netflix. My sister loves NF and I noticed they offer bluray too so I'll probably sign up. Of course $30 a pop doesn't make sense when I can just rent for a modest price.

That reminds me, I gotta order the HDMI cable for the PS3!

Ok, don't I want an HDMI cable for the PS3 for the best output? I'm looking at monoprice and only seeing Component and S-video.

Whoa, there are tons of regular HDMI cables in a bewildering assortment of gauges and lengths etc. I'd guess a cable between 4 and 6 feet long would work.

Can anyone recommend a good HDMI cable from monoprice for my PS3?

I LOVED Heavenly Sword. Beautiful game and a very refreshing game play style.

After looking at screen shots and some trailers, I am intrigued. It looks like a gorgeous game. I think it got a 7.0 rating from IGN mainly because of the shortness of the story/game. Most of the player ratings were much higher.

I'd recommend getting the HDMI cable below:

BJC Belden Series-F2

You pick the length you need but I wouldn't go with the 6' cable from them as they only have white (for now). 😛 These are great cables and I recommend them over monoprice's cables as they are more flexible and feel like better quality.

More flexibility means it has thinner core cable and less shielding. You can get the 28 gauge 6 feet HDMI cable for $4 at monoprice, which is perfectly fine for the PS3.

Alot of promotional material is taken from the PC versions of games for obvious reasons.

The screen shots weren't huge big so I doubt it would have made much difference whether IGN lied to us and showed us PC screen shots vs PS3 Screen shots. If the PS3 can render 1080P, it will probably look pretty nice.

One of the problems with PC version is it depends much on your hardware. Do you have cutting edge or aging hardware. In my case, I'm getting a latest generation console (for Bluray and a few games) and my PC is about 4 years old with a Radeon X800SE video card. Rather than blow a sizable sum to get a new PC that will display Heavenly Sword in it's best glory, I'm thinking I'll just get it for the PS3 and it should look pretty nice on a 46-inch HDTV at 1080P with 120hz refresh. I hope.

The demo is on PSN, download it and give it a go.

Sounds great. As long as this works with my PS3 coming later this week, I'll be good to go. I ordered that HDMI cable along with a Wii compoent cable for my daughters Wii.

Dapunshier,

I'll try out the demo after I get everything set up and working! Great idea.

This isn't really telling the whole story.

On the Xbox 360, if you set your console to 1080p, it will _always_ output at 1080p (with the exception of DVDs on component).

On the PS3, you select what resolutions your TV can take. The game then takes its pick as to which it prefers and outputs at that resolution.

The difference between the two approaches is that, in the 360's case, the console is doing the upscaling. In the PS3's case, it's almost always the TV that does it (with a certain few games doing a small internal upscale from 640p to 720p). If your TV has a bad upscaler, you may run into issues with the PS3. *shrugs*

My TV is the Samsung LN46A650 46-inch 1080P. What DVD's I've displayed on my old progressive scan Panasonic don't look all that good - no surprise. So I'd guess the upscaling will be better done by the PS3.

I've heard many tell me that the PS3 Bluray player upscales DVD's pretty well. Maybe not the best out of other upscaling DVD players, but pretty good. I don't know about games, but I'd be pleased if I could display a game at 1080P from a 1080P source from the PS3 (perhaps that depends on the game itself as to what is the highest resolution it was programmed to display at.

Mainly, I'd like to set the PS3 up to display to send the signal to the TV at the highest resolution available in the game, which will be hopefully all 720p minimum, and better yet, 1080P.

What resolution does Heavenly Sword display out at to the TV via HDMI cable?

720p/1080i, IIRC. There aren't very many PS3 or 360 games that actually render internally at 1080p.

I have the same TV and I've found the upscaling on the PS3 to be fantastic, much better than the other upscaling DVD player I have.

Cool, even 1080i is better than 720P? I'd guess the main disadvantage would be fast action where the interlacing may not refresh as fast as 1080P and therefore not look as good.

Glad to hear the PS3 is supposed to upscale DVD's well. I don't have a large DVD collection by anymeans, but what I have looks out of focus or fuzzy. Hopefully the upscaling done by the PS3 will improve that markedly. Yeah, I don't expect it to look like a full HD Bluray movie but any major improvement will be welcome. For example, I have LOTR on DVD and it isn't expected to come out on Bluray for 3 years. So I'm stuck with some DVD's and want them to look better than they do right now.

Having a thicker core is beneficial on longer runs (greater than 15'), however with short runs, you want something more flexible. The monoprice cables are pretty stiff and put undo pressure on your HDMI ports when trying to run them through a cable manager. The bluejean cables work much better. Trust me, I bought both of them (monoprice and bluejean cables).

OK.... well I have the monoprice coming and will try to work with them for now as long as they give a good singal. If they prove to be difficult to work with, I'll order the better ones. I got a 6 footer and this is simplyl a flat screen on top of a wood TV cabinet so I can probably make it work ok for now.
