i used it when i upgraded my hard drive. backed up onto a thumb drive. then replaced harddrive and restored from thumb drive. i dont see why you would want to use it as a regular conventional backup... I guess later on when you have much more things on your harddrive it would be good to backup just incase your drive dies.
they might come preformatted to fat32, i dont think the ps3 will do it for you, if anything you can plug it into a computer first, format it, then plug it into your ps3. it should get detected automatically by your ps3 at that point.
