PS3 already exhibiting overheating problems

If exploding Sony batteries in your notebook isn't a concern to you, then perhaps an overheating PlayStation 3 will be. A recently released report from Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson in Tokyo said that PlayStation 3 units on display at the Tokyo Game Show about 10 days ago operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset.

Sony's PR department replied that this was not a result in a problem with the PlayStation 3 itself but rather a problem with the unique temperature conditions present in the Sony booth of the trade show. According to Sony spokeswoman Nanako Kato, "For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

Needless to say, reports of design problems this late in development was not good news for Sony. In fact, PlayStation 3 units are due to ship in Japan and North America in little more than a month from now. Upon hearing the news, investment firm Goldman Sachs Group Inc. lowered Sony's stock rating to "neutral" from "buy" and the stock lost 2.75 per cent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Well... it's not out yet.

Maybe, juuuust maybe, they'll be able to fix it before the system comes out. I don't care either way, though; the Wii is the only console I'm seriously considering.

What the hell? What made their booth so special that we won't be able to reproduce the conditions at home?

These threads keep getting more and more pathetic. Do you honestly believe sony would release a broken console? God, you people are dumb.

One of two things are oozing from this post, sarcasm or idiocy.

I was watching that Tokyo thing and one in the background went into failure mode while the interview was going on.

And PS2's. And X-Boxes, and X-Box 360's. Seems to be a trend.

At least Nintendo has a good track record on their systems.

Exactly, if the DS's biggest issues is this then nintendo is doing excellent.

"Unique temperature conditions"? You mean like those found inside of an entertainment cabinet perhaps? What... does Sony expect everyone to mount their PS3s in front of an AC unit?

Man, that 1080p black screen looks so real. It's like looking through a window...at night...with no stars.

I'm not a Sony fan and won't be buying a PS3 but this makes me feel bad for them.

Hope heat issues are not present in shipped versions.

heat issues are whats killing 360s as well.. you cant put hardware that generates heat like a PC into a small sealed little box with 1 vent and 1 fan...

we all know to cool our decent PCs what it takes...

the more power you try to jam into a small box the more heat youre gonna make...

hell we all know how hot laptops get and they arnt even geared for flat out gaming and 3d...
