E3 2005: PS3 Price Revealed?
One of the most expensive consoles ever created, according to Japanese reports.

by Matt Casamassina

May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.

Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The beast of a machine utilizes the powerful Cell processor, a custom-designed graphics chip by Nvidia, and 512MBs of RAM for a quantum leap in performance. The system will also be the first-ever to support high-def movie-playback out of the box, taking advantage of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc format.

Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. If Mainichi Shimbun is correct, gamers will be asked to pay a hefty price for the high-end functionality.

IGN was unable to validate this news with Sony officials. Stay tuned for more as the story breaks.

Additional note: I guess they will suffer "a considerable loss" on each console due to trying to promote the blu-ray disc format as well.

Yeah, how many people really want another Betamax format. Will Sony ever stop with their proprietary crap?

Betamax
Memory Stick
UMD
BluRay

Make it stop.

Actually, I read in the paper that BluRay was started by the DivX guys.

There are, like, a bajillion different types of memory like memory sticks. SD, etc. Sony's just got their own. What's the problem?

i hate the fact that memory stick was so much cheaper before the PSP came out... sadly my phone uses MS pro duo and now prices are so expensive cause the PSP uses the same thing

The PSP doesn't even use memory sticks or memory stick pro's. Why would the PSP launch effect the price of either of those two mediums? Pro Duo has always been prohibitively expensive anyway.

PSP uses Memory Stick Pro Duo. memory stick was just a general term =P

I remember when my friend bought a 512 memory stick pro duo for 100 bucks when he first got his psp.

Yeah, I bought the 256MB version for my PSP. They've always been bloody expensive, but the price went up because of supply and demand.

If I bought a SD or CF card there is a good chance it might work in another brand of camera if I needed it to. Its just a better system if you use a common memory feature.

You might be a little young to remember the whole Betamax disaster.

Apple manages to pull it off, but Apple thrives on being kind of non mainstream to start with.

Nope. I just got my PS2 about 2 months ago. Not interested in even bothering with demos and games for anything else at all.

No, I'm just saying that it's really not that interesting. I won't see anything like that in person for a long, long time. I just ... don't care. 😛
