PS3 40GB or 60GB Refurb?

I'm going to purchase a PS3 imminently. My question is which sku should I choose. I'd like to spend under $500 on the console, so I'm limited to two choices: PS3 40GB or PS3 60GB refurbished. Here are the pros/cons of each version as I see it:

PS3 40GB
+ cheaper ($400)
+ comes with Spider Man 3 Blu-Ray (meh...)
+ cooler: 65nm Cell processor

- doesn't play PS2 games

PS3 60GB
+ plays PS2 games
+ more HD capacity
+ SACD support

- more expensive ($460)
- refurbished
- 30-day warranty only

Any advice one way or the other is appreciated.

I tend to think the 40GB version is the way to go. However, I really want PS2 compatibility as I never had one (I had Xbox and PC) and there are a gazillion PS2 games I missed out on like Katumari, God of War, Metal Gear xx, Shadow of Colossus etc.

It's the 60GB version I'm considering getting refurbished since it's under $500. If I were to but the 40GB, it would be new.

Thanks, that card discount is a great deal. However, I've already got two credit cards and the SonyCard seems to only give rewards for Sony products.

I'm leaning on getting the 80GB version now. For $500, I'll get a new system with backwards compatability + Motorstorm.

On a side note, I had the extreme bad luck of purchasing an HD-DVD player last week, days before the Warner Bros announcement  One of the reasons I'm getting PS3 now is for Blu-Ray.

That makes the 40 gig $299 and the 80 gig $399. If you go the 80 gig route you have about 80% BC with PS2 games + Motorstorm and SACD support.

Oh snap, I didn't realize there was another Sony Style deal. I've been toying with the idea of getting a PS3, especially since my 360 is dead and the HD-DVD format may be as well. I'm tempted to try and obtain the coveted 60GB model, but the 80GB for $399 is a much better deal.

EDIT: Thanks for pointing that out, BTW.

I'd just go for the 40Gb (I did).

However, since you "really want" PS2 compatbility, looks like 80Gb for you. If you plan on getting a lot of PS2 games, it's worth it considering a PS2 is about $140. Just remember that the 80Gb is only ~~80% compatible with PS2 stuff. Even though I wanted BCC, I didn't feel the $100 premium was justified.

Personally, I would stay away from a refurbed 60Gb. Unless you can find one new, the lack of warranty and "refurbed" status is not worth it. The PS3 is more reliable than the 360, but it still isn't death proof. If the shit hits the fan, you'll be paying $150 to have it fixed (probably after some negotiating about refurbished and warranties). The 60Gb should have near 100% BCC though with the actual PS2 hardware onboard. So, if you can find a 60Gb new, go for it, if not, just go for the 80Gb.

I went for the 40GB and dont regret it at all.

I haven't owned/played a PS2 game in about 3 years so Sony can take the BC and shove it.

To be fair, it's not like BC is the *only* thing you get for the $100. You do get a $40 game, a couple extra USB ports, a memory card reader, and 40 extra gigs of storage.

On their own, each one isn't that compelling, but one you add them together and spread it out over 5 years(assumed life of console) the additional premium isn't that big of a deal.

SonyStyle still has the $100 off deal with a new Sony/Chase CC so you could get the 40GB or 80GB a bit cheaper if you qualify.

Check the database to see which games the 60 GB and 80 GB BC works for.
Back DB

If you care about rumble you'll need to wait for the Dual Shock 3 to arrive in the US ($40-50) or get it from Play-Asia.com ($70?)

You could always get a PS2 Slim for $130 + $30 for 2 Sony memory cards (PS3 doesn't need these it uses the hard drive). It includes a Dual-shock 2 controller. With or without also getting a 40GB PS3.

LOL nice way to put it... I also have the 40GB version because if I had any PS2 games left I would also have a PS2 to play them on.

Now, for the most part, you like to keep your PS3 for as long as you can afford. Getting a refurbished 60GB is like YMMV (30 days is not decent enough for the trouble). Instead, if you go for a new 40Gb, you will have 1 full year warranty; plus, there are current deals at Toysrus, CC, BB with freebies, and throwing 5 more free movies by mail. Can you really do that for the refurb? The 40Gb version is cooler and more power effeciency; thus, there is a chance you save more money on electricity if you play games and watch a lot of movies. Did I say the cooler the better for the longevity of the hardware? Now if you want to play PS2 on the PS3, the trouble is not worth it. First of all, you can get a used Ps2 for less than a Benjamin (the official price drop is coming). Secondly, would you have much time to play those many games? Would you consider playing latest titles (COD4, Uncharted, Rachet and Clank, Rock Band,...) and allocate your time for other activities like watching movies or stuffs like that? My point is getting a refurb 60Gb is not worth your time, unless you can get a hand on a new 60GB (keep your eyes open). I have the 60Gb the first day, never had a chance to play any PS2 titles :( BTW, do you have a HDTV set? If not, save yourself the trouble and get that the first thing, and a biggest size that you can afford.

Pretty true, also if you're nervous about the lngevity of the system you could always pick up an extended warranty from a retailer. That way if something does happen, you can just return it to the store for a replacement.

Thanks for the advice. I decided to get a new 80GB version. May not be compatible with as many PS2 games as the 60GB due to software emulation, but it is new and comes with a full warranty plus Motorsport and 5 free movies.

Am excited about being able to watch movies 1080p. I've also got Shadow of Colossus and God of War on order - those are two games I've always wanted to play on PS2.

One more console. One more power cord. One more controller. Lots more cables running to the receiver/tv.

For "light" PS2 use just use the PS3 and be done with it.
