PS3: 20gb or 80gb?

If you had a choice between the two, and the 20gb was $100 less than the 80gb, which would you choose knowing the HD can always be upgraded?

I'm facing this dilemma, and not sure which way to go.

I'd wait a few months and get the 80GB MGS4 pack-in SKU with DualShock3.

Even if they were the same price, I'd go with the 20gb since it has full hardware backwards compatibility. If you were able to find a 20gb new, snatch it up fast.

Both are refurbs, but I can buy a 1 year warranty for about $50.

I'd buy an 80gb bundle if I could find one retail, but I cannot, and don't want to wait until June.

Take the 20 and spend the extra $100 on a HDD upgrade.

Remember that the 20GB doesn't have built-in WiFi if that is important to you.

Yea, your question is really dependent on what is important to you. If you're never going to play a PS2 game on it, forget what I said about the 20GB having the best backwards compatibility. If you must have wireless, get one of the 40-80GB models.

The PS3 hard drive sizes have been traditionally used as the identifying feature of each model, but in reality it's one of the least important differences between them.

EDIT: And am I crazy, or did you have an offer for a quick $15 bucks in your sig a minute ago? :p

I'm not aware of any USB solutions. You can always use an ethernet->WiFi bridge of some sort, if you choose. The 20gb also doesn't have a card reader, but I wouldn't sweat it too much - you can use USB card readers if you choose, IIRC.

A lot of this is going to come down to how much WiFi, full BC, and a card reader are worth to you, and that's not something we can answer, as it depends on your setup and what you play.

I bought a 60gb from Gamestop for $470 (taxes and shipping included). I'm happy.

The 40GB runs cooler with its 65nm CPU, has wifi, and a year warranty if you buy new. Pair it with a real PS2 slim and you have the best possible backwards compatibility.

Unfortunately there's no word on when the 40GB package will be upgraded with the dual shock controller.

I second that. The PS2 looks like a$$ on an HD set. Playing PS2 games on the PS3 is extremely crisp and clear.

The 40GB PS3 doesn't play PS1 or PS2 games. :(

Don't PS2 games (that support 16:9) have fake widescreen though? By that I mean there are black bars on the sides and bottom (or at least the sides), even in 16:9 mode. This has prevented me from hooking my PS2 up to my HDTV, and will probably deter me from wanting to play PS2 games on a PS3 when I get one.

Backward compatibility shouldn't be an issue. I'd go with the 80GB or the 40GB because they're second Gen.... Don't buy the rollout models...that's my advice for any new product, car, etc...

Negative, it doesn't play PS2 games, but does plat PS1 games. How do you think it plays those PS1 games from PSN?

I wouldn't. I remember when I found out you can't extend your warranty. $150 to repair a console, BS!

Alright I'll break it down:

PS3 20GB - Plays: PS1,PS2 (PS2 hardware support)
PS3 40GB - Plays: PS1
PS3 60GB - Plays: PS1,PS2 (PS2 hardware support)
PS3 80GB - Plays: PS1,PS2 (PS2 is supported in software - *slim* chance that you may have some compatibility issues with certain PS2 games)

That should be enough information to make your decision.

Yes, I realize that. DS was advocating a 40GB PS3 & PS2 combination for the best backwards compatibility. I consider both the 20GB and 60GB (both discussed in this thread) to be an improvement over his suggestion for the "best possible backwards compatibility" because they will upscale the PS1/PS2 games.

Then again, we have no idea if the OP cares at all about BC since he hasn't commented on it.

BC is a MUST for me. But it looks like I just scored an 80gb bundle on Amazon as it was in stock for about 2 minutes.

yay!
