PS3 2.0 update coming tomorrow, 11/8.

Sure, 2.00 might sound like a magical milestone, but in reality there's not a whole lot here that's going to revolutionize your gaming experience, and sadly nothing yet to bring online communication and play to parity with Xbox Live and Xbox's handy dandy dashboard. That said, Sony is strengthening some of the PS3's unique features, like the new Remote Start function that lets you fire up your PS3 remotely when you're accessing it with your PSP, and playlists for music and photos. One of the biggest "additions" is DualShock 3 support, but that's so laughably last-gen that it's hardly worth noting. Sony is also packing in the ability to create and share your own Themes for XMB, and a news ticker that will eventually make way for the importing of your own RSS feeds. Sony also added a new XMB group to the main menu to pave the way for Home and other internets-friendly features, and -- oddly enough -- Canon printer support to really round out the package. The update will be available in the States tomorrow, November 8th.

There is also a link inside the link for screenshots of the "new" interface. Basically, a few pictures of some themes, and the new main XMB option dedicated solely to the PSN.

great so does this mean i'm going to have to update BEFORE i can download the damn uncharted demo?

this fw upgrading on ps3 is ridiculous. they are too often and so god damn big (compared to dash updates).

Mine only take about 10 minutes to install and update. What's the big problem? They're not that often.

Apparently the update is already available. Well, at least it is for me. My brother just said the PS3 is asking to update.

Yeah, the update is already available.

Ya, just turned mine on and started the download. Mine's going pretty fast, though, it got 10% in 30 seconds. Will probably be done by the time I walk back in there in a couple of minutes. Glad to see that I can go ahead and get this out of the way tonight and be able to download the Uncharted demo first thing when I get home tomorrow.

They need to add divx or xvid support. That is the main feature(s) that I want. Also, removing the "do you want to run this plugin" popup from the web browser would help.

Any word if the PS3 will ever get divx or xvid? (right now my only options are linux and streaming it with tversity)

That's one of the wonderful "features" they kept over from the PSP and its XMB 😛.

I find it funny that it took them so long to add a simple feature like changing the background color of the XMB. I remember having a PSP when it first came out, and it took a few months before they finally added that in a firmware update. Here we are to a much more expensive, advanced machine, and it took them a year to figure out that people still want the option to customize their console.

EDIT: After finishing the update a few minutes ago, I gotta say that I love the Air Paint theme. Looks awesome, I'm going to use it for a while.

Its just background. You only see it when you're not doing anything with the machine anyway. I don't even like that they wasted space by putting code to do it.
Its like you rarely see the wallpaper because you maximize all your windows. But its there hogging up memory.

I just leave it black.

Just a quick heads up to those who care - this update gives 5.1 audio support in the XMB, so converted mp4's and such can now be played back in 5.1.

Looks like a few hundred GB's of re-encoding for me....

so can you message while in game?
Can you play music while in game?

Thats prob the only two things i care about...
