PS3 + 1080i tv

Finding a lot of conflicting info out there and I'm not sure when some of the early issues were fixed so I'm not really sure what is true and what is old info. Let me slide if this has been covered before. 🙂

I have a Pioneer Elite PRO-630HD (6+ yrs old but as pretty a picture as the day I got it) that does 1080i/720p/480i/480p via DVI. Planning on using an HDMI->DVI converter and optical for audio. Question is...what resolution will 1080p games play at and what resolution will Blu-Ray movies play at? Any limitations with this setup?

Using the same setup here. Games that support 1080p pretty much support 1080i, so they'll run at that. BD movies will play at 1080i. Most disc based games run at 720p, there's no 1080 upscaling on the PS3 like there is on the 360. Everything still looks awesome tho.

I use a DVI-to-HDMI converter as well, and it works great. The only limitation is that you don't have 1080p, which, in my experience, isn't really much of a limitation at all 🙂.

No limitations. My family's TV is 720p/1080i as well, and everything looks fantastic! It all either runs at 720p or 1080i, depending on the source.

The only issue is if your 1080i doesn't accept a 720p signal, at which point the PS3 down-converts 720p games to 480p. As long as your tv takes a 720p signal, you'll be fine.

To elaborate slightly more, some early games didn't support a 1080i resolution, just 720p. Since the PS3 has no "magical upscaling" via chip like the 360, people with 1080i-only TVs found themselves forced to use 480p instead. This was only a problem with early PS3 games, IIRC, and I think a couple got patched.

No, most disc based PS3 games are still only 720p, just like on the XBox 360. The only difference is that the 360 has the upscaler built in, so people with a TV that skipped 720p as a viable option get stuck with 480p output on a lot of games. I have a PS3 hooked up to an older Sony 46" RPTV in our game room, and it will do 480p and 1080i, but not 720p, so almost all PS3 games have to be played at 480p on that TV.

I've got a PRO-510HD. Actually I'm not using it anymore but it sure did display DVDs well. With a TV that old, you should take some time to remove the screen and clean the accumulated dust off the screen and mirrors if you haven't already. Makes a big difference.

BTW, I'm playing PS3 Blu ray on my panny plasma 1080i and it looks superb.

Actually the reason why it looks so perfect is it just went in the shop a few months ago, I had the problem with green scan lines common on these tv's. There was a class action a few years ago for it, Pioneer paid for everything and had a couple components replaced...all is well now and hopefully I get a few more years out of it. My next plan is to completely rearrange the basement and put in a 120" projector which is going to end up being $$ and I'm trying to put it off.
