PS2 - what's the difference between the old and new?

ethernet port built in...smaller size...thats it? No graphics enchancements 😛 This is Pstwo not 2.5 😉
Consoles don't work that way. They're developing the PS3 for graphics enhancements, and no sane developer would spend money developing PS2 games (or even features within a game) that can only be used by 1% of PS2 owners.

Also, another difference is the PSTwo has a pop-top lid for loading discs instead of a motorized tray, so you have to leave several inches of space above it in an AV rack.

Ethernet. No firewire. I don't think it has optical audio out anymore. Pop-top instead of tray, no HDD bay. Progressive-scan DVD. I suspect some build-quality updates.

people have said that quality is even worse as far as build quality is concerned.

Is there any truth to the rumors of games not being compatible on the psTwo?

yes, gamecube cames aren't compatible on the psTwo. just clearing that whole issue up.

?????

anyway the slim ps2 is really, really small. if you cut it in half and stack it together, its about half the size of a gamecube. but some compatibility issues are there, only one model of remote works; multitap as well. HDD doesn't work with it (which saddened me), but the pop-top-lid for the cd is nice. Built in ethernet adapter (and dialup adapter for you stoneage users :x) But i've heard some stories of overheating issues after a couple of hours of gaming. I guess if you leave it ventilated it should be fine.

The funny thing is Sony said they couldn't make the initial PS2 with the pop-top because the high speed of the spinning disc might cause the lid to blow off and send the disc hurtling out and slicing into someone's neck.

That's scary, considering what a POS the original build was.

uh, It still has a motorized tray 😕 where are you seeing this pop top lid at?

maybe i just hadnt noticed yet? (its my brothers, i never play PS2) that damn thing is really freaking small though.

See that black bar on the top? That's there the pop-top lid begins~ 🙂

I have both units...very similar in functionality with the elimination of the hd and a few other minor items. I noticed that the new slim line PS2 is cheaply made compared to the older ones(thicker) Also theres an issue with the laser burning out early on the new slim line PS2's. I heard that this was a common problem. Ive modded both units and I would still prefer to buy the SPCH39001 units over the new Slim Line PS2's.

I read that the new Slim PS2s are suppose to load games a little faster than the older thick models but other than that theres no real improvements. People report that it overheats and shuts down on them but I cannot confirm how it is. I'm looking to buy a Japanese PS2 but I don't really want the slim ps2.

My PSTwo's never had the overheating problem. There _ISN'T_ a fan in it. The power brick is external, and there's no HD bay. The original PS2 multitap can easily be modded with a small phillips head screwdriver and about 30 seconds to work with the PSTwo.

It's got an IR sensor on it too which the PS2 didn't have. I think.

AFAIK, there were some later PS2 models with the IR sensor. I'm sure I heard somewhere that the small PS2 doesn't have the sensor...

The way I see it, the profit margin on the bigger/higher quality PS2 was getting smaller and smaller. They boosted sales and decreased production costs. Yay for Sony.
