PS2 to USB Keyboard

I busted the PS2 keyboard connector on my computer, thought I'd solve it by getting a PS2 to USB adapter. Plugged it in and the computer see the device but can't identify it. Do I need some sort of generic driver? I Did a search and specific drivers came up, nothing generic. It's just a standard PS2 keyboard, older compaq if that matters, I like the keyboard because it's heavy and has a good feel.

Any ideas or options?

I would buy a new keyboard but that is just me.

I really HATE the junky keyboards available now. My favorite is an Omnikey by Northgate that goes for $$ when you can find them. Good, solid mechanical keys. The Compaq I use on one of my other computers is close to that. I'd have to pay $50-$100 if I could find somthing comparable.

All I need is a driver (I think...)

I don't think you need a driver, I believe you need this

adapter. Not all adapters are created equal. I have this combo and it works fine either directly connected or via USB KVM. I used it with old AT mechanical keyboard going into PS/2 adapter and then into this PS/2-to-USB one.

Thanks, Alex V - I came to that same conclusion. I was going for a quick and cheap fix. My local shop had an adapter that allowed you to plug in your keyboard and mouse but it was $30. the little ps2 to usb adapter i bought was $4.95. the Liked page was very informative. I guess I'll have to spend the $$. Thanks.

You can use a USB-PS2 adapter, just not the passive ones that come with keyboards that /specifically/ support both USB and PS2 modes.

You need an active USB-PS2 controller adapter, like,

Given the customer reviews, you might be well advised to buy a different model There are plenty to choose from.

looks like the ones we use at work. Avoid those that have the logic chip inside the USB plug - the plug gets too fat, blocking the other port in a pair.
