I had a PS2. None of the games that I saw really intrigued me except for MGS2. FFX was good, but it's no FF3. It's not even in the same Relm. 😉

Can't wait for MGS3 next month!

I was playing FF 9 (actually a PS1 game) until I got hooked on the Jagged Alliance 2 Urban Chaos total conversion, and FF 9 was pretty fun.

I dunno, maybe I'm just stuck in the past, but FF9 seemed like a pathetic attempt to copy the old school FF games. The old style goofy humor is gone, the characters make me hate them (when they should do the opposite), and the story wasn't that exciting. The one great thing about FF9 IMO was the graphics and sound. Some of the environments in that game were really really cool.
Since I started with FF 9, I'm like the people who've only seen a movie remake and don't realize how it desecrates the original. Someone out there probably liked the Rollerball remake (gah!).

To me FF 9 is no Fallout 1-2 or Planescape: Torment, but is still fun to play with some cool cutscenes.

ps2x is suppose to be coming out very soon...

it has some changes like the cd will insert much like a car cd player... and then some other things...
i think it will come with all the stuff youll need for ps2 online... which when i bought my ps2 you had to buy seperately... on top of that it think it is suppose to be faster and better graphics...

however if you want to buy an original... i bought mine the day it came out.... and ive been considering selling it... it will be like a collectable or something...

PSTwo or "the new PS2" as Sony calls it, is already out. The DVD drive is a flip open like the original PSX. It comes with an ethernet port and modem port built in. There is no change to the underlying hardware. It plays and looks (graphically) the same as the normal PS2.

The DVD drive is a flip open like the original PSX.
That's annoying. Harder to put it into a stereo rack if you have to leave 5" of clearance above it because it doesn't have a slide-out DVD tray like any civilized device should.

I agree, but I bet that allowed them to reduce the size more than an internal tray would. I like slot loading myself.

Consoles these days mostly don't do RPGs. They do semi-interactive stories. The final fantasy series are the worst offenders. To call them linear is to not do justice to the word.

Gasp! Pedophila! :Q

Ther'es quite a bit of PS2 RPG you should rent/buy.

I'd rent X-Men Legends if you want a decent, multiplayer RPG-type game.

Final Fantasy X should get at least a rent out of you. It's a great linear RPG...I actually enjoyed the system they implemented in it with the grid leveling.

Suikoden 3 is one of the best RPGs on PS2. Although it doesn't follow 1 and 2, you still get that classic feeling to it. You'll see a few recognizeable characters from the previous game only, like Luc and Jeanne.
Suikoden 4 won't correlate into Suikoden 3 either...'cause it's set before the first Suikoden game.
Naval warfare and a promising storyline had me pre-ordering like whoa.

Shadow Hearts 2 is a decen game. I loved the first Shadow Hearts and their combat system is pretty unique as well. I'd rent it if you like the dark humor and are looking for an RPG where it's still button-pressing but has a lot of timing and coordination involved.

Since it's debut on Super Nintendo, Star Ocean has been one of the most memorable RPG series.
It's unique in the fact that it holds a real time battle system where you move about attacking the enemies.
It can get repetitive after awhile.
The crafting and private action systems that the game has are also pioneer additions that the series implemented.

Disgaea is a decent game too. It's got a funny plot and the characters are very, very memorable. I love the voice acting in it. It reminds you of Final Fantasy tactics except with some tweaking. You have different terrain effects and you can move characters on your side in any order you want to, allowing you to create combos and everything a lot easier. I'd rent it first, but if you like it, go ahead for La Pucelle and Phantom Brave.

I recently just purchased Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne.
It's a popular RPG series over in Japan and this third installment was just released here to America not too long ago.
It definitely has some deep controversial and religious overtones to it. It reminds me of Xenogears as far as pushing the envelope goes.
I like the battle system, though it's just the traditional press button with the usual twists.
The cool thing is recruiting demons and fusing them together. You'll get some unique monsters and meet up with some truly interesting characters and enemies.
The game is very dark and sinister and you'll find yourself drawn in very easily.
I love the camera work and the controls.
Dope game.

There's some that I've played/bought in the past.
I'll drop more as I think of them.

It's pretty fun.
I always seem to stop playing my games though once I get near the end.

I did it with Star Ocean, Xenogears and SMT.

I tend to do the same, especially nowadays where I have less time to play. Back in the day I'd level up for hours on end and go obliterate the end guy, but now I just can't. Ah, memories. 🙁

😛

Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne

Im loving this game...

The game made me want to start up a thread like this one to chat about PS2 RPgs but I decided to resurect this thread instead🙂

Ive played Disegaea, FFX, and some of FFX-2 on the PS2. And in my opinion Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne blows them all away. I havent been this hooked on a console game since FF Tactics. After starting this game I have been in the hunt for other PS2 rpgs in hopes that Ive missed a game that might bring console rpg goodness like Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne. I picked up Suikoden III today for $15, havent started it yet...I will after Im done with Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne.

Has anyone else been playing this game or tried it?

i think i'm the only one in the world that plays a lot of rpgs and liked ff8 a lot :'(

or maybe i'm a sucker for love stories XD
