quote the whole message:

Sony fights back and decides to drop the retail price of their PS2 to just $99.99, the price of a Nintendo GameCube.

Now, this information isn't official yet, but we are not going to report it as a rumor either. A trusted friend of mine from with-in the retail giant Target has stumbled upon the in-store advertisement designs for the PS2 price drop. He then got a confirmation of the price drop from his Regional Vice President. While not exactly the highest position in the chain, he does know of happenings before they happen. Target is planning on doing a huge promotion for the PS2 price drop.

GCA will keep you informed.

Im sure that will boost sales far beyond their competitors (as if they aren't already enough ahead). Its time for me to buy a new one soon anyways since my old one is pretty much on its last legs.

I don't see this happening (5% chance?). On the last round of price drops, people thought the Xbox & PS2 would drop from $199 to $149. They only dropped to $179 (*yawn*).

I am convinced a drop will happen partially because of the new $99 GC, but probably to $149.

Time will tell..

I really can't see sony matching the gamecube's new price of $99.

Unless of course they feel they'll make up the difference on the games & through marketshare.

This would certainly bring XBOX to it's knees. 😉

Uh that's 3 years worth of usage... in any technology 3 years could turn any item into a worthless piece of cr@p...

Sony Says 90nm PS2 Chip Production to Start in Oct.
>> YOKOHAMA, Japan (Reuters) Wed 8 October, 2003 14:46 BST - Sony Corp's 6758.T game division said on Wednesday it plans to start mass production of a new chip to power the PlayStation 2 (PS2) game console this month, using cutting-edge 90-nanometer processing technology, in a move that will lower manufacturing costs.

Monthly production of the chip, which combines the game console's microprocessor and graphics chip, will start at "several" hundred thousand units before growing to more than a million units by next year, Sony Computer Entertainment's Chief Technology Officer Kenshi Manabe said at an industry event.

"The development costs to shrink down the chip can become quite high, but if you consider that we sell 20 million PS2s a year, then in the end it's cheaper," Manabe said at a forum sponsored by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan.

^^ It will happen in October / November ^^

i don't have much input on this, i just wanted to pass the info to u guys, i'l buy a new ps2 when metal slug 3 comes out... but i hope it's tru too... and metal slug 3 is gona rock, ne1 a good place for ps2 imports?

another possibility is the rumor is a tactic to slow down the quick selling gamecube, given the history of how sony killed dreamcast sales by promoting the hell out of the ps2, several months before it actually went on sale..

this sounds more logical to me.

I agree that this is a very big price drop and breeds some skepticism as a result.

If Sony were able to handle this without breaking the bank, I could see truly damaging the Xbox for this Christmas season because Xbox already sells at a significant loss, and Microsoft would have to invest even further in order to match a drop like this.

My two cents.

im skeptical also, but do you think its possible that the price drop can be a one-day kind of deal, perhaps for Black Friday? i know its still a month and a couple of weeks away, but ya never know...

Nintendo posted it's first ever loss

I doubt Sony will follow the same route.
Sony has a lot more of a diversified line than Nintendo. They can lose a pissload of cash on the PS2 and still post a healthy profit overall.

Nintendo just has games.

I'm not saying they will do it, actually I doubt it, but I'd love them to drop just so they'd force Microsofts hand.
