I was thinking of picking one up after my b-day because of Devil May Cry 3 and God Of War. Shadow Of Rome also looked very good 🙂.

DMC3 is the best game ever.
GoW is the best game ever.
SoR is the best game ever.

Now go buy one.
 
You can do what I did to my PS2!
1. Mod it
2. Install network adapter
3. Attach hard drive
4. Get HD Loader
5. ...
6. PROFIT!!!!

Edit: If you're agaisnt pirating and all that, you can start at #2, because loading games onto a hard drive will kill your load times.

Castlevania (the PS2 version)

NBA Street V 3 || Tony Hawk (These games are much better with the PS2 controller)
Metal Gear Solid 3
Twisted Metal Black (old but fun)
ICO (Never played it, but always heard good things.)

GTA:SA is not PS2 exclusive. It is coming out for Xbox and PC.

that pretty much sums it up
the Tony Hawk games play better on a PS2 also, they may not look as good as the xbox, but the controller is much more suited for them

 
I've owned 2 PS2's (one of which I still have). My advice:

Don't be a sucker like me. Don't buy one.
 
I was given one for my last birthday. I was also given GTA: San Andreas, which I love. However, every single game since, including MGS3 and GT4, I've put down after a very short time. I don't like the games very much.

Basically, it collects dust.
