Heh, isn't it obvious what EB is doing? They know that at E3, the price will be dropped to $149.99 so they are taking advantage of the helpless souls who don't know by enticing them with this new price. Of course I'm sure they can PM later, but how many of them are as hardcore as we are? Not many...marketing strategies suck!

Yeah, there is rampant speculation on a price drop, but I wouldn't believe it until I saw it. Who starts these rumors anyway? The companies? The press? Some maniac on a forum?

If you want a PS2 now, buy it. Otherwise, sit and wait.

Is this $179.99 price an official price drop from Sony, or is eBgames having a sale?

This could be the price drop -- there was never anything official saying it would go down $50. Maybe they will just go to $179. Or maybe this is just a trial, and Sony will announce "official" pricing depending on how it goes at ebgames. Or maybe they will decide to raise prices. Who knows?

I guess if this is an actual PS2 price drop, Microsoft will surely match and drop the xBox to $179.99. And so will Nintendo.

Not official yet... BUT... babbages/Gamestop is having the same sale. So either they jumped the gun, or its just a sale at retail.

Is Gamestop related to eBgames? Strange, they have both dropped their prices at the same time while Sony hadn't mentioned anything about a price drop.

No. Gamestop is owned by Barnes & Noble - EBGames is owned by Electronics Boutique.

I don't think EB is related to Gamestop. Gamestop is the same company as Babbages, Software Etc and Funcoland but not EB that I'm aware of.

Sony will reduce PS2's price in Japan due to the introduction of newly improved model (SCPH-50000) I hope it will affect price in the U.S. (Just hope :p)

Sony announced a new revised PS2 w/ Progressive Scan DVD support and a network adaptor for $199.99. EB Games lowered thier price on the standard PS2 model to $179.99 today, confirmed. GameStop did the same thing. EB and GameStop are two competitors.

Hope this clears some things up :)

Its been announced. PS2 prices will not drop. Instead Sony will introduce a new improved PS2 that includes the network adapter for $199. Thats why you see the retailers dropping the old PS2 to $179... They wanna get rid of inventory to make room for the new ones.

Sony just announced that they'll be selling their somewhat redesigned PS2, including the network adapter in June for $199.
Gamestop/EB are just trying to get rid of their old-style PS2s, I don't think that this is an official Sony price drop.

Checkout this thread and my post on it for some links.

Now if Sony would just include a hard drive the PS2 would almost have everything an Xbox has. ;)
