PS2 DVD Question

Ive had my PS2 for a while now and during that time have seen it fail or misread on a number of DVD's (American Pie 2 for instance). Either the DVD doesnt work at all or the movie will fail or skip at some point during the movie. This happens on like 20% of DVDs. Someone told me the OFFICIAL Sony DVD remote comes with a driver update disc (search Ebgames.com for PS2 DVD). I just want to know if anyone has it and whether or not it fixed their problems (everyone I know with a PS2 has DVD issues). Thanks.
 
I have had less problems with the updated software that comes with the Sony DVD remote. It hasnt been totally problem free though. The PS2 seems to have some 'issues' when switching layers. The sony remote also requires that you have a memory card and space available to store date for the DVD software.
 
While I haven't tried many movies on my ps2, the ones my kids have tired have been fine. I know at http://ps2.ign.com/ they are/were putting together a list of movies that do and do not work correctly on PS2. I also read on there a while back (in the "question/answer section" mail) something about the driver update, but don't recall if it fixed any trouble with DVD's.
The board there is a good source of information on the ps2, only it doesn't have a "search" function 😕
 
I've had the video get out of sync with the sound on my unit on about 60% of the movies I've played on it. Doesn't happen hardly at all on my "real" console unit (fairly cheap GE unit). I really wouldn't recommend the PS2 as a DVD player. If you want to play PS2 games, then by all means grab one, but if you want to watch DVD's then I've had better results out of the ~$80 Apex units Circuit City sells (I bought one for my parents).

Of course the updated software might fix a lot of the problems I had. BTW, does anyone know how much space on the mem card the new software takes up?
