my PS2 has been giving me disc read errors a lot lately. I've sprayed some compressed air to get the dust out as much as I can and turned it off to see if it can cool any. Is there anything else I can do other than wait?

I believe Disc Read Errors usually result in a new system. I'm almost certain Sony charges for repair too. Unless its only happening with the same game, then its probably that...

I think there are lots of threads on this. Mine did it a ton, i ended up taking it apart and swabbing the lens with a qtip dipped in alcohol. It works for a couple months and then i have to repeat.

My friend has had this happen to 2 PS2s. I have to send them back for him b/c he is in a wheelchair.

I was able to get 2 free RMA from Sony, but I still gotta ship them.

I had to get my PS2 serviced. They wanted money for it, but I bitched and complained and got it comped. I told them that there is no reason that I should be getting this error and just kept it up until they comped it.

Its a pretty common problem. A testament to Sony's build quality :disgust:

It happened to my first PS2. I bought a used one from Gamestop and they have a 90 day defective garuntee on all their used products, so I was able to get another used one and it worked fine until I got sick of it :p

damn, I'm only home for the next week so it doesn't do me any good RMA'ing it now. It gave me disc read errors on MIB II (DVD), Vice City, and Smackdown. After letting it cool, it was able to read the Vice City disc. I tried the Smackdown disc and it worked a few times, but it would freeze on the first load screen after it checked for a memory card. I may try the alchohol qtip later and report back later.

for something that sits on the floor or by the TV and sucks in dust all day long I think they hold up pretty well

I just found that because it came up with the error for me on Maddeon 2003 :(

edit - I haven't tried it yet. I'm gonna try the rest of my games out first...

lol, i did that almost step by step without reading your post. thanks for the link :)

i put vice city in and it loaded fine this time. smackdown has a few minor scratches (it is a blockbuster rental) so that may be the reason it is still giving me trouble (it freezes at the load screen still). my sister had to go up to return a video so she is going to switch out the game and i'll see if i can get it to work.

its a common problem with dvd (blue bottoms) discs. Typical resolution is buying a new system

Actually, the blue discs are regular CDs. Most DVD discs (GTA3, Mark of Kri) are regular silver bottom discs.

Not really. All of my other systems have held up better. But the PSX and the PS2 have always had problems. Doesn't really matter, I just won't buy another system by them even if they have a game that reaches out of the screen and gives hand jobs.

I'd be first in line at your store if a game came out like that :)

By the way I don't take credit for that observation - you can thank Chandler from Friends for that one :)
