just got off the phone with sony customer service rep. and he straight out said no when i asked him if i can get it fixed for free. I've been doing some research and lots of people said sony would fix the common "disc read error" even though the warrenty is off, as long as i dont have any mod chips... is the customer rep being an @ss or is it tru that they dont fix ps2's anymore???

im gonna have my gf try calling to see if those bltches would fix it for free to girls.

Bought mine used so I can't join, but it's BS that Sony made faulty players and is now settling without admitting guilt. Class action suits are crap.

Why not just take it apart and clean the laser.

Its just a couple of screws.

Been planning on that, just haven't had time. I've also packed it up and put it away since I don't really have time for video games anymore. :)

i did this before to no avail, followed the directions to the letter on two different model ps2s and it was a waste of goddamn time.

u think to yourself, ill spin the white wheel, its SO logical until you go and test it and see the damn red screen or "disc read error" so you go back to where you magic markered default height(ya like it matters)..then you break out the canned air and get the same result.
ill tell you what, go outside and start a fight with the manhole cover..its about as productive

I had to buy a new ps2. I tried all the laser fixes and they did not work. I then proceeded to sell it to soem guy on craigslist for $50. I told him i numerous emails and im person that the laser does not work. 2 weeks later the guys asks me for a refund stating"I keep getting the disc read error, i want a refund..."

Mine was working, but it took some finesse (ie, had to hit the reset button several times). It wouldn't touch DVDs at all. I bought one of those optical drive cleaning discs, and it improved it a great deal. It will play DVDs now but chokes on any imperfections. Games seem to be perfect now though.

Again, it's in the closet right now and probably will stay there until someone buys it. Any takers? :D

Wow. Maybe you should just go and buy a new damn ps2 you stingy bastard. Sony is NOT going to fix anything for you regardless of what you read online. Your girlfriend can bitch and moan all she wants on the phone, however, nothing will and can be done for you. You might as well start saving a dollar a day or something until you have enough to buy a new or used one in the future.

wow Chrono sounds really grumpy... I just asked a question... geez... sorry that i dont have my parents buying me $hit like that like Chrono's parents did.

and first of all. i already have a ps2 that is new, and second I'm only doing this as a favor from my friend who bought my old ps2. so dont go out calling people stingy without getting the facts.

and i just called sony and paid money to have it fixed so maybe im not as stingy as the rich Chrono claimed to be. by the way, its hard for a college student to just go out and buy a new ps2 even with an university IT job.

and thanks for everyone who tried to help me on this topic. but i've tried everything from adjusting the laser voltage to lens height adjustment... the disc read but it kept on freezing... i think the laser is just going bad.

I have had sony replace mine 3 times. One extra time because it was "LOST" during delivery, ie. the FedEx guy stole it.

Wow, maybe Sony shouldn't make products that knowingly fail and make another buck dishonestly when people are forced to replace a product because they won't fix it.
Your pessimistic reply is nothing short of stupid, as you don't truly know if something can be done until you ask. "The sqweaky wheel gets the grease", my pops always says.
It's better to ask at the chance of saving yourself a hundred dollars or so than to just buck up, bend over, and take it as your hard earned money is WASTED.

So why don't you get the stick out of your hind end and stop being counter-productive to our forums.

This probably isn't too helpful, but my solution is to not buy a PS2. I got one for my birthday, and promptly traded it in for an XBox. Soft modded that and did not have worry about reading crap optical media. Not that owrrying if a Maxtor hard drive is going to work is much better. (Yes, I know XBoxs come with Seagate hard drives, but if yoiu think I kept the stock HDD after modding it, then you are truly a n00b)
